What Is Illinois Car Sales Tax?

When purchasing a car in the state of Illinois, it is essential to be aware of the car sales tax you will need to pay. The sales tax ensures a fair distribution of the tax burden among consumers and contributes to state revenue.

The Illinois car sales tax, known as the Retailers’ Occupation Tax, is imposed on any vehicle’s selling price or fair market value, whether purchased from a dealership or private party. Currently, the general car sales tax rate in Illinois is 6.25%. However, this can vary depending on your location within the state, as cities and counties often impose additional taxes.

Apart from the base 6.25%, local municipalities may levy extra taxes. For example, Chicago adds an additional 1.25%, resulting in a total car sales tax of 7.5%. It is crucial to check local rates before purchasing a vehicle to ensure you are aware of the total amount you will need to pay.

Keep in mind that trade-in credits can reduce your taxable purchase price in Illinois. For instance, if you trade in a vehicle worth $10,000 while buying another one for $20,000, you will only need to pay taxes on $10,000.

It is also important to note that certain exemptions apply to Illinois car sales tax. For example, if you buy a car outside of Illinois but bring it into the state within 30 days of purchase and plan to use it exclusively in Illinois, you will not have to pay Illinois car sales tax. However, if you intend to use the vehicle outside of Illinois even for a single day after purchase within 30 days from buying it, you must pay Illinois car sales tax.

In conclusion, understanding the Illinois car sales tax is essential for anyone planning on purchasing a vehicle in the state. The general sales tax rate is 6.25%, with additional taxes depending on local jurisdictions. Always make sure to check local rates and exemptions to avoid any surprises when finalizing your vehicle purchase.
