What Is Gatekeeping in Gaming?

Gatekeeping in gaming refers to the practice of excluding or vetting individuals from the gaming community based on arbitrary criteria such as skill level, gender, race, age, or social status. It is a widespread phenomenon that affects both gamers and game developers.

Historically, gatekeeping in gaming was used to keep casual gamers or outsiders away from the hardcore gaming community. It was a way of preserving the sanctity of gaming by ensuring that only the most dedicated, knowledgeable, and skilled gamers would be allowed in. However, in recent times, gatekeeping has become a more toxic and exclusionary practice, with many gamers and gaming communities discriminating against those who do not fit their narrow views of who should be playing video games.

For example, some gatekeepers believe that gaming is a male-dominated activity and that women are inferior gamers. This belief has led to the harassment and exclusion of female gamers, who have been subjected to derogatory comments, sexist jokes, and unsolicited advances. Similarly, gatekeeping based on race or ethnicity can lead to the exclusion of gamers of color, making gaming an unwelcoming and hostile space for marginalized individuals.

Another form of gatekeeping in gaming involves elitism, where gamers belittle those who are not as skilled or knowledgeable about the games they play. This can discourage new or casual gamers from participating in gaming communities and, in turn, limit the growth and diversity of the gaming industry.

Gatekeeping can also occur within the game development industry, where recruiters and hiring managers may limit job opportunities to those who fit their preferred mold. This practice can result in a lack of diversity in the workplace and limit the creative potential of game development teams.

In conclusion, gatekeeping in gaming is a pervasive issue that limits the inclusiveness and diversity of the gaming community. It is time for gamers and game developers to recognize the harm that gatekeeping causes and work towards creating more inclusive and welcoming spaces for all gamers, regardless of their background, identity, or skill level.
