What Are Real-Time Strategy Games?

Real-time strategy games, or RTS games for short, are a popular type of video game that require players to think on their feet and react quickly to changing situations. These games are all about building, managing, and commanding armies, with victory coming to those who can outwit and outlast their opponents.

The core gameplay of an RTS game involves controlling units on a map as players attempt to capture resources, build structures, research new technologies, and ultimately destroy the enemy’s base. Players must carefully balance resource management with unit production and deployment, constantly adjusting their strategies based on the situation at hand.

One of the defining features of RTS games is their real-time nature, meaning that gameplay unfolds in real-time and players must make decisions quickly and efficiently. This adds an extra level of challenge to the game, as players must be able to multitask and manage multiple elements simultaneously.

RTS games have been popular since the days of early computer gaming, with classic titles like Dune II and Command & Conquer setting the standard for the genre. More recent games in the genre include Starcraft II and Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition.

Unlike turn-based strategy games, where each player takes their turn in sequence, in an RTS game all players are playing at the same time. The action can be fast-paced and intense, requiring players to anticipate their opponent’s moves and react quickly to counter them.

In addition to traditional base-building and combat, many RTS games also include elements of diplomacy and politics. Players can negotiate with other factions and form alliances to achieve their goals, adding a layer of complexity to the game.
