What Are Live Captions on Windows 11? Here’s How to Enable Them

Live captions are a new feature in Windows 11 that automatically generates captions for multimedia content such as videos, podcasts, and even virtual meetings. It’s a game-changing accessibility tool for users with hearing impairments or those who simply prefer to read captions instead of relying on audio.

Enabling live captions in Windows 11 is easy, and it only takes a few quick steps to access this feature. The first step is to make sure you have Windows 11 installed on your device. If you’re not sure if you have the latest version or your device is incompatible, you can check Microsoft’s website for compatibility requirements.

Once you’ve confirmed you have Windows 11, follow these steps to enable live captions:

1. Open Settings by clicking on the Start menu and clicking on the gear icon.

2. Click on Accessibility in the left-hand menu.

3. Scroll down to the “Hearing” section and click on “Live captions.”

4. Toggle on the switch to enable live captions.

Once you’ve enabled live captions, Windows 11 will automatically generate captions for any video or audio content playing on your device. You can also adjust the settings for live captions, such as font size, background color, and text color, to customize the captions to your preferences.

Live captions can be especially helpful during virtual meetings or webinars, ensuring that those with hearing impairments can follow along with the conversation without missing any important information. It also promotes inclusion and accessibility in the workplace and educational settings.

Overall, live captions are a powerful addition to Windows 11, breaking down barriers for users with hearing impairments and providing a more inclusive computing experience.
