GarageBand is a popular digital audio workstation widely used by musicians, producers, and music enthusiasts worldwide. However, not everyone has access to a physical piano or MIDI keyboard to create music in GarageBand. Fortunately, if you own an Apple Mac computer, you can turn your keyboard into a GarageBand piano and start creating music instantly.

Mac Keyboard as a MIDI Keyboard

One of the best features of Mac computers is that they come with a built-in virtual MIDI keyboard that lets you play and record music in GarageBand without a physical MIDI keyboard. To access this feature, follow the steps below:

1. Open GarageBand on your Mac.

2. Create a new project and select the option “Keyboard Collection” under the “New Track” menu.

3. In the GarageBand interface, click on the “Musical Typing” button located at the bottom left of the screen.

4. A keyboard will pop up on your screen, and you can start playing notes by pressing the keys on your physical keyboard.

Customizing Your Virtual Keyboard Layout

The beauty of the virtual MIDI keyboard in GarageBand is that you can customize the keyboard layout to suit your preference. You can change the size, shape, and orientation of the keyboard, as well as the location of the keys. To customize your virtual keyboard, follow these steps:

1. Click on the “Musical Typing” button to bring up the virtual keyboard.

2. Click on the “Gear” icon located at the top right of the keyboard.

3. From the dropdown menu, select “Customize Layout.”

4. A new window will pop up on your screen, and you can change the size, shape, and orientation of the virtual keyboard as you wish.

5. You can also click and drag the keys to adjust their positioning. Once you are done, click “Done” to save your changes.

Using External MIDI Keyboard with Your Mac

If you are not comfortable using the virtual MIDI keyboard on your Mac and prefer a physical keyboard, you can also connect an external MIDI keyboard to your Mac computer. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Connect your MIDI keyboard to your Mac via USB or MIDI cable.

2. Open GarageBand and click on “New Track.”

3. Select “Software Instrument” and click on the “Create” button.

4. In the GarageBand interface, go to “Preferences” under the “GarageBand” menu.

5. Click on the “Audio/MIDI” tab.

6. Under “MIDI Input,” select your MIDI keyboard from the dropdown menu.

Conclusion

Music production has come a long way, and with the advancement in technology, creating music has become easier than ever. With GarageBand and your Mac keyboard, you can start making music even without fancy music equipment. Whether you choose to use the virtual MIDI keyboard or an external MIDI keyboard, the possibilities of creating great music with GarageBand are endless.
