These Small Towns on the Pacific Coast Have the Best Historic Districts

The Pacific Coast of the United States is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, sun-kissed beaches, and laid-back lifestyle. But sprinkled along this illustrious coastline are small towns with historic districts that offer a window into the past and an experience that transports travelers to another time.

One such jewel is Mendocino, California. Established in the 1850s, this quaint town is perched on a headland surrounded by the Pacific Ocean. Its historic district is brimming with Victorian-era homes and buildings that have been carefully preserved. Walking through the streets of Mendocino is like stepping back in time, and the Mendocino Historical Review Board ensures that structures within the district maintain their architectural integrity.

Further north in Oregon, you’ll find Astoria. It’s best known for being the first permanent United States settlement on the Pacific coast, and for its rich maritime history. The historic district here features beautifully restored Victorian homes that overlook the Columbia River. The Flavel House Museum, once home to a prominent local family, now serves as a testament to Astorian history and is open to visitors year-round.

Not to be overlooked, Port Townsend, Washington’s historic district boasts an entire Victorian seaport that has been remarkably well-maintained. Established in the late 1800s during the maritime trade boom, Port Townsend was originally intended to be the largest harbor on the west coast. The town’s economy took a downturn when plans for a major railroad fell through, but this inadvertently preserved its Victorian architecture, sparing it from modern development.

In California’s central coast lies San Luis Obispo. With its beginnings as a mission community, San Luis Obispo’s downtown area now serves as its historic district with old Spanish architecture lining cobblestoned streets. This includes Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa from which the city derived its name.

Each of these coastal towns encapsulates the spirit of Americana and offers a distinct charm through their carefully conserved historic districts. Visitors can explore antique shops, stay at historic inns and B&Bs, partake in local heritage festivals, and wander museums to absorb the local history. Whether it’s experiencing Mendocino’s wooden boardwalks or strolling Astoria’s hillside streets, these small Pacific Coast towns provide an enriching glimpse into America’s diverse past while simultaneously offering modern amenities and attractions for all types of travelers.
