Iowa, often celebrated for its sprawling cornfields and quintessential Midwestern charm, boasts some beautifully preserved historic districts in its small towns, tempting visitors to step back in time and experience a rich cultural heritage. Among these, the following towns are noted for their exceptional historic districts that offer a window into Iowa’s past.

Pella is renowned for its Dutch heritage which comes to life in its historic district. The architecture is characterized by historical brick buildings, windmills, and the annual Tulip Time Festival which infuses the town with color and traditional Dutch activities. Strolling through the district, one can admire the historical Vermeer Mill, the tallest working windmill in the United States, and the Scholte House Museum which exhibits artifacts from the town’s Dutch settlers.

Decorah, nestled in northeastern Iowa’s bluff country, is another gem with its Norwegian influences evident throughout its historic district. The Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum is an immersive treasure not to be missed. Visitors can explore over 33,000 artifacts and 12 historic buildings that detail the experiences of Norwegian immigrants who settled in the area.

The Amana Colonies consist of seven villages known for their unique communal society which thrived independently for 90 years. Their history is meticulously preserved through the Amana Heritage Society. The area showcases communal kitchens, woolen mills, and furniture shops that reflect the craftsmanship and lifestyle of the German Pietist settlers who lived there.

Bentonsport resides along the Des Moines River in southeastern Iowa and is part of the Villages of Van Buren County. With intact merchant houses from the 1840s and a well-maintained iron bridge dating back to 1883, Bentonsport’s scenic beauty seamlessly merges with history offering a serene step back into Iowa’s early days as a trading post and river town.

Lastly, Mount Vernon’s claim to historic fame emanates from its Civil War era buildings lining Mount Vernon Historic District’s main street. This area has been rejuvenated with a vibrant arts scene but maintains its historical integrity through efforts such as preserving the original Cornell College campus architecture.

These small towns are testimonies to Iowa’s dedication to preserving its historical narrative through these districts. They provide not just an educational journey through America’s heartland’s past but also showcase how history can be integrated into modern-day experiences inviting travelers both local and global to explore Iowa’s hidden treasures.
