The Very Best Sunday Roasts in London

London, a city renowned for its cosmopolitan offerings and rich culinary heritage, certainly knows how to honor the tradition of a Sunday roast. Whether it’s lamb that’s been slow-cooked to perfection or a beef rib that falls off the bone, the quintessential British experience is celebrated across pubs and restaurants in every corner of the capital. Here’s where you can find the very best Sunday roasts in London.

One cannot talk about Sunday roasts without mentioning The Jolly Butcher. Located in the trendy neighborhood of Stoke Newington, this vibrant gastropub serves up a roast that’s both generous in portion and flavor. The Yorkshire puddings are as large as they are airy, and the gravy – a recipe passed down through generations – is simply unparalleled.

For those who lean towards a more upscale dining experience, Simpson’s in the Strand offers a carvery so regal you might expect to see Her Majesty at the next table. With its history stretching back nearly two centuries, Simpson’s roast beef is legendary and carved table-side from silver-domed trolleys.

But let’s not forget The Pig and Butcher in Islington, where the farm-to-table ethos is taken seriously. The meats sourced are seasonal and organic, ensuring each plate not only tastes of tradition but also of ethical consideration.

Then there’s The Harwood Arms tucked away in Fulham, London’s only Michelin-starred pub. The venison version of their Sunday roast is enough to make you want to write home about it. It’s paired with inventive sides that elevate it beyond what one might expect from typical pub fare.

Greek Street’s The Golden Owl must also get an honorable mention for marrying classic roasting techniques with a hint of modern culinary creativity. Nestled in the heart of Soho, it caters to both traditionalists and those looking for something slightly left field.

Lastly, if you find yourself wandering through East London on a sleepy Sunday afternoon, be sure to drop by The Waterfront. Their ‘bottomless’ Sunday roast – yes, you read that correctly – allows you to feast on endless helpings of perfectly roasted meats, crispy potatoes, and all the accoutrements you can imagine.

London’s Sunday roast scene is as diverse as it is delectable. From Michelin-starred masterpieces to hearty pub classics, there’s something to satisfy every palate. Be sure these stops are on your foodie map next time Sunday rolls around—it’s a British tradition that truly embodies the phrase “a feast for all senses.”
