The mirror of fascism in big tech

The rise of fascism is a terrifying historical specter, and its echoes can be chillingly heard in the halls of modern technology. While Big Tech may not be explicitly fascist, its practices and algorithms bear a disturbing resemblance to the tactics employed by totalitarian regimes.

One key similarity is the control of information. Just as fascist regimes suppressed dissenting voices, Big Tech platforms curate and filter content, shaping the narratives users encounter. Algorithmic bias can amplify extremist views, while censorship policies, often applied arbitrarily, silence dissenting voices. This creates a distorted reality where the truth becomes malleable and susceptible to manipulation.

Another alarming parallel is the cult of personality. Big Tech CEOs, often hailed as visionary leaders, wield immense power over our digital lives. Their companies, like fascist regimes, cultivate a sense of loyalty and devotion among users, fostering an unquestioning acceptance of their pronouncements. This blind faith can lead to the silencing of criticism and the erosion of independent thought.

Finally, the surveillance state echoes fascist practices. Big Tech companies meticulously track our online activities, amassing vast amounts of personal data. This data is used for targeted advertising, but also for manipulation and social control. Just as fascist regimes used surveillance to monitor and suppress dissent, Big Tech companies wield their data collection as a tool for shaping our behaviors and beliefs.

While Big Tech may not be a direct equivalent of fascism, the parallels are unsettling. It’s time to scrutinize the power dynamics at play and hold Big Tech accountable for the potential consequences of its unchecked growth. We must foster a critical awareness of the ways technology shapes our perceptions and demand transparency and accountability from the companies that control our digital lives. Failure to do so could lead to a future where the digital realm becomes a breeding ground for the same toxic ideology that plagued the world in the past.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech.
