The best untold stories of Nick Saban from Kirby Smart, Lane Kiffin and more former assistants

Nick Saban, the esteemed head coach of the University of Alabama’s football team, is not only recognized for his multiple national championships and indelible impact on college football but also for his influence on many of his former assistants who went on to become head coaches themselves. Behind every public figure, there are stories that only a select few can tell—stories that shed light on character, work ethic, and the personal connections that shape legacies.

One such storyteller is Kirby Smart, now the head coach at the University of Georgia and a former assistant under Saban. Smart often recalls the relentless dedication Saban has to analyzing game film—a task they spent countless hours on, groggily reviewing plays late into the night. It was this commitment to detail and preparation that Smart credits to developing his own coaching philosophy.

Another former assistant with stories to share is Lane Kiffin, currently leading Ole Miss. Kiffin’s anecdotes tend to lean toward Saban’s notorious sense of humor, which surfaces unexpectedly amidst the high-pressure environment. He reminisces about a particular instance during a tense game when Saban cracked an unexpected joke over the headset, lightening the mood and reminding everyone that even in serious times, it’s important to maintain perspective.

Stories from other assistants delve into Saban’s mentorship and the personal advice he would provide his staff. They portray a man invested in their professional growth beyond their current roles. Former assistants like Jimbo Fisher (Texas A&M) and Will Muschamp (formerly South Carolina), among others, reflect on moments where Saban pushed them to be better strategists but also to value building strong relationships with their players.

The private side of Nick Saban offers glimpses into his philosophy of leadership and success. From these untold anecdotes shared by former colleagues like Kirby Smart and Lane Kiffin emerges a more nuanced portrait of one of college football’s most storied coaches—a man who has shaped not just the trajectory of Alabama’s football program but also those who have learned from him before forging their own paths as leaders in the sport.
