The Best Sushi, Sandwiches and Squab We Ate This Year

As the year comes to a close, it’s time to reflect on the culinary highlights that made an impression on our palates. Immersed in the world of gastronomy, we encountered numerous dishes that wowed us, but three categories stood out: sushi, sandwiches, and squab.

When it came to sushi, one establishment managed to transcend the rest. Nestled in the heart of the city, Sakura Sushi Bar redefined finesse with its Omakase experience. The Bluefin Tuna Toro was an unforgettable piece served with just a brush of aged soy sauce that enhanced its buttery decadence. Each slice seemed to melt away, leaving behind a flavor that lingered long after the meal had finished.

Sandwiches are often viewed as a humble staple, but they can be elevated to something extraordinary with just a bit of creativity and care. That’s exactly what we found at The Rustic Deli with their truffle-infused roast beef sandwich. Layered between slices of freshly baked ciabatta bread, the aromatic truffle aioli complemented the savory beef to perfection, while crisp arugula and sharp cheddar rounded out a sandwich that was both grounded and gourmet.

Finally, we turned our attention to squab – a less common yet delicately flavored game bird. Le Petit Gourmet made this dish a centerpiece with their Herb-Crusted Squab served over a bed of wild mushroom risotto. The bird was cooked perfectly medium-rare with a crisp skin that contrasted beautifully against the tender meat within. Paired with earthy mushrooms and creamy risotto, each bite was a harmonious symphony of textures and tastes.

Each dining experience brought its own set of flavors and memories that contributed to this food-filled year. As we look ahead, one thing is certain: The joy of discovering the best in sushi, sandwiches, and squab won’t soon be forgotten.
