The Best Soulslike of 2024 – Reigniting the Flame with ‘Echoes of Eternity’

As we advance through the decade, the Soulslike genre continues to innovate and captivate gamers worldwide. In 2024, one game not only embodies everything that makes these games profoundly engaging but also pushes the boundaries of what we’ve come to expect from such a challenging and rewarding genre. That game is ‘Echoes of Eternity.’

Developed by Aeternum Studios, an indie game developer that has risen in prominence due to its dedication to fine-tuning combat mechanics and environmental storytelling, ‘Echoes of Eternity’ takes players on a harrowing journey through the desolate lands of Eldorath. In this forsaken world, your character is a lone seeker of truth trying to uncover the real cause behind the collapse of civilization.

‘Eldorath’ set itself apart for several reasons. Its combat system finds the perfect balance between being punishingly difficult and immensely satisfying. Every blow struck feels significant and every encounter with even the lowliest of enemies could spell demise for those not paying attention. The game doesn’t just challenge players’ reflexes and their mastery over weapons but also their strategic thinking when it comes to resource management and skill progression.

Aeternum Studios took it a notch higher with enemy design that’s both intimidating and inventive. Ranging from grotesque behemoths lurking in the cursed swamps to swift, shadow-like assassins hiding in abandoned temples, they make each battle memorable.

But where ‘Echoes of Eternity’ really shines is in its environmental storytelling and world-building. With no direct narrative driving player progression, players are left to piece together snippets of Eldorath’s history through eerily beautiful landscapes filled with subtle clues, item descriptions, and fleeting visions that appear as they traverse deeper into madness.

Moreover, multiplayer elements beautifully integrate into the larger experience. Rather than side features, cooperative play and player-versus-player (PVP) engagements are deeply woven into the fabric of Eldorath’s lore, enhancing both stakes and gameplay satisfaction.

For its deep combat system, imaginative enemies, hauntingly atmospheric world, and innovative multiplayer integration – among numerous other accolades – ‘Echoes of Eternity’ stands as 2024’s best Soulslike experience. Aeternum Studios achieved what many thought was increasingly becoming impossible; they delivered a Soulslike game that feels both reassuringly familiar for veterans while being breathtakingly fresh and functionally infinite with its possibility paths.

If there’s any title this year that dares you to light the flame once more in a genre that consistently tests its champions’ resolve, it’s ‘Echoes of Eternity.’ It is not only a testament to how far indie developers have come but also how much raw potential still exists within this challenging category of games.
