The Best Free Language Learning Apps

Spread the love

In the era of digital advancement, language learning has transcended traditional classrooms. It’s now possible to learn a new language at your convenience and pace through language learning apps. So, whether you’re planning a trip abroad, looking to enhance your career prospects, or just aiming to broaden your cultural horizons, these free apps can be an invaluable resource. Here’s a roundup of some of the best free language learning apps available today.

Duolingo

Topping the charts in popularity, Duolingo offers a gamified learning experience. You can learn many languages ranging from Spanish, French, and German to lesser-studied tongues like Swahili and Hawaiian. The app is user-friendly and lessons are designed as mini-games that make the learning process fun and addictive.

Memrise

Memrise stands out with its emphasis on memorizing vocabulary through an extensive collection of mnemonic flashcards. These are aided by videos of native speakers which helps in learning pronunciation and local expressions. If you’re someone who learns visually or through repetition, Memrise could be the app for you.

HelloTalk

For those who believe language is best learned through practice, HelloTalk provides a platform for exchange. You converse with native speakers around the world, text them, speak with them and correct each other’s grammar and pronunciation – it’s like having a penpal in the digital age!

Busuu

Busuu boasts a community of over 100 million learners worldwide. What sets it apart is its feature that allows you to practice your writing and speaking skills and receive feedback from native speakers. Moreover, it has a comprehensive language program that covers all aspects from vocabulary to grammar lessons.

Lingodeer

Lingodeer might not be as well-known as some other apps on this list but it’s particularly good for Asian languages like Japanese, Korean, and Chinese. The curriculum is structured very systematically which aids those who prefer more traditional learning methods.

Anki

Last but not least, AnkiApp employs spaced repetition systems (SRS) to help memorize vocabulary efficiently. While not exclusive to language learning – it could be used for memorizing anything – AnkiApp’s customization makes it powerful for those wanting to build their own language decks.

While these apps offer content for free, most have premium versions available offering more advanced features or ad-free experiences. Nevertheless, even the free tiers provide immense value for anyone looking to dive into a new language. Happy learning!

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject.
