The best city in South Africa – also ranks second in the world

Cape Town, a picturesque coastal city in South Africa, has recently earned the distinction of not only being the best city in the country but also securing the second spot in a global ranking. This recognition comes as no surprise to those who have experienced its breathtaking natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and dynamic urban life.

Nestled between the iconic Table Mountain and the sprawling Atlantic Ocean, Cape Town’s landscape is truly postcard-worthy. The city boasts a rare blend of natural wonders, including pristine beaches like Clifton and Camps Bay, the rugged Cape Point, and captivating botanical gardens such as Kirstenbosch. It’s an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise with activities ranging from hiking and surfing to whale watching and paragliding.

Culture vultures are equally at home in Cape Town. The city’s history is deeply entwined with that of the nation, reflected in landmarks like Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was once imprisoned. The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA), housed in a converted grain silo, showcases cutting-edge African art and underlines Cape Town’s status as a creative hub on the continent.

Not to be overlooked is the city’s culinary scene which is as diverse as its population. From gourmet restaurants to innovative street food, Cape Town offers flavors to satisfy every palate. The nearby Cape Winelands also provide a scenic backdrop for some of the world’s finest wine tasting experiences.

The Mother City’s social tapestry is vibrant and increasingly inclusive. With its mix of African, Asian, and European influences, Cape Town celebrates a mosaic of cultures through festivals, markets, and everyday interactions—a testament to its complex yet harmonious identity.

What sets Cape Town apart in global rankings is also its commitment to innovation and sustainability. As a forward-thinking metropolis, it’s making strides in renewable energy adoption and water conservation—an exemplary response to past challenges such as the severe drought it faced.

All these factors come together to make Cape Town not just South Africa’s best city but a top-ranked destination worldwide. Visitors leave enchanted by its splendor—and residents beam with pride—firmly placing it on the map as a city that must be experienced to be believed.
