In the world of horticulture, the health and maintenance of plants are paramount. With the advent of technology, plant enthusiasts, gardeners, and horticulturists can now turn to their smartphones for assistance in caring for their green friends. A multitude of apps are available to help with plant identification, watering schedules, and care tips. However, not all apps are created equal. Here’s a look at the five best free plant care apps that come highly recommended by horticulturists.

1. PlantNet Plant Identification

PlantNet is an app that functions like a “Shazam” for plants. It allows users to take a photo of a plant, and using image recognition technology, the app provides suggestions on what the plant might be. It’s incredibly useful for identifying unknown plants and flowers you might come across during walks or in your own backyard. It is a collaborative database that also helps science as each identification helps to better train its AI.

2. Waterbot: Plants watering

Watering is crucial for every plant, but it can be hard to remember when each of your plants needs water, especially as they have different requirements. Waterbot helps solve this problem by tracking watering schedules for each of your plants. Simply input information about your plants and how often they need water, and the app will remind you with notifications.

3. Planta – Keep your plants alive

For those who don’t have the greenest of thumbs, Planta is an excellent guide to plant care. The app helps you be a better plant parent by providing detailed care guides for a wide range of common houseplants as well as outdoor plants. It includes features like light meter tools that guide you on where in your home different plants should be placed based on their light requirements.

4. PictureThis: Identify Plant, Flower, Weed and More

Another strong contender in the plant identification scene is PictureThis. This visual recognition app not only identifies over 10,000 species but also gives detailed information and care tips after identification to keep your flora thriving. While parts of the service are part of a paid subscription, its basic identification function remains free.

5. Gardenia – Plant Organizer

Featuring an extensive library of more than 12,000 plants with care information and reminders for tasks like pruning or repotting, Gardenia is essential for managing larger gardens or collections of houseplants. The ‘Plant Organizer’ feature helps you keep track of what you have grown in your garden and offers calendar reminders for individual plant care schedules.

Whether you’re a seasoned horticulturist or just starting out with your first pot plant, these apps offer valuable information that can help ensure healthy growth and beautiful blooms without costing you anything but time spent downloading them from the App Store or Google Play Store. Remember though that while apps can provide helpful advice and reminders, nothing beats personal attention and the joy of hands-on gardening!
