Every year, students must choose the major they wish to pursue in college. While people should base their decision on their interests and talents, it is fascinating to examine what the most popular options are in the United States. We’ve compiled a list of the top 10 most popular college majors over the last decade.

Business

Business degrees are among the most popular undergraduate degrees in the globe, let alone in the United States. In actuality, around 19% of undergraduate degrees conferred in 2018 were for business students.

History and Social Sciences

Every year, an increasing number of students pursue jobs in the social sciences. Over 160,000 degrees were conferred in this discipline in 2018, making it one of the most popular majors in the United States.

Biomedical and Biological Sciences

More than 119,000 degrees were given to students who majored in this discipline in 2018. Biological and biomedical sciences have grown in popularity by about 70% since 2006, making them one of the fastest-growing courses in the United States.

Health Care Professions

We will always require medical experts, and now more than ever. Over 245,000 bachelor’s degrees were conferred to students majoring in health-related fields in 2018.

Journalism and communication

Students who get these degrees can work in almost any sector. Every year, about 95,000 college students get a degree in communication and journalism, making it a very popular career.

Engineering

Engineering is one of the most popular college majors, which is not unexpected. In 2018, approximately 122,000 students graduated with a degree in this field. This field’s prominence may be attributed to a variety of factors, including the fact that engineers have a plethora of work choices.

Education

In 2018, about 80,000 undergraduate degrees were awarded in this discipline. Education is another sector that will constantly provide career prospects, which is why it is so popular.

Psychology

Psychology is another popular college major that has been around for a long time. More than 116,000 degrees were conferred to students in the discipline in 2018. This figure is anticipated to skyrocket over the following several years.

Computer and Information Sciences

Even though this major is regarded as one of the most demanding in the world, it remains immensely popular. Nearly 80,000 degrees were given to students in this profession in 2018.

Performing and Visual Arts

Despite having a significantly lesser earning potential than the others, this is one of the most popular majors. In 2018, 88,000 undergraduate degrees were issued, and this figure is expected to rise further.

Finally, consider the following:

Business, social sciences, history, biological and biomedical sciences, communication and journalism, education, health professions, engineering, psychology, visual and performing arts, and computer and information sciences are the top 10 most common majors in the United States.
