Teaching Controversial Topics: Everything You Need to Know

When it comes to arguing, you will most likely be required to explore two-sided themes that frequently divide an audience in terms of perspective. This is done to make the debate simpler for both sides, as there will be many issues to discuss.

What Exactly Are Controversial Issues?

If you ask a group of people if they believe in vaccinations, you will most likely get a mixed response. This is due to several factors.

Some people feel that the work of physicians and scientists is completely trustworthy, thus they will gladly take a vaccination. Some people, on the other hand, may be opposed to injecting man-made drugs into their bodies.

In this sense, you may define that specific issue as contentious. A contentious issue is described as a concept or thought that elicits a mixed reaction or response from a group of people.

Examples of Current Controversial Issues

When honing your debating abilities, you might look into a variety of prominent and contentious themes.

Gun control and abortion are two of the most often questioned questions. These concepts might be difficult to evaluate since your reasoning may involve a few sensitive aspects. However, the fact that these issues are so sensitive is what makes them so contentious.

Among the other contentious issues are:

  • Religious freedom
  • Privacy rights
  • The Trump presidency
  • Marriage equality
  • Animal rights
  • Evolution
  • The learner debt crisis

When debating contentious issues, it is critical to consider both sides of the argument. In this manner, you will be able to answer any objections they may offer, thus strengthening your argument. Furthermore, you should approach these themes with caution because they may be personal to numerous members of your audience.
