Introduction:

Filing taxes can be a daunting experience, especially when you’re unsure about the forms, deductions, or tax credits applicable to your specific situation. The good news is that there are resources available that offer free tax help! In this article, we’ll cover ways you can receive assistance with your taxes without spending a dime.

1. Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

The VITA program offers free tax help to low-to-moderate-income individuals, persons with disabilities, the elderly, and taxpayers with limited English proficiency. IRS-certified volunteers provide basic income tax return preparation and electronic filing services. Generally, this includes households with an income of $55,000 or less. Visit the IRS website to locate the nearest VITA site.

2. Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE)

The TCE program specializes in providing free tax assistance to taxpayers who are 60 years of age and older. IRS-certified volunteers affiliated with nonprofit organizations receive grants through the program to offer their expertise. Many TCE sites are operated by AARP Foundation’s Tax-Aide program. To find the closest TCE site, use the AARP Foundation’s Tax-Aide Locator Tool.

3. IRS.gov

The IRS website itself is a treasure trove of information when it comes to filing your taxes. It offers interactive tax assistants, FAQs, publications, and forms—all available for free. Additionally, the “Free File” portal on IRS.gov allows eligible taxpayers access to brand-name tax software or fillable forms to file their federal taxes electronically for free.

4. Low-Income Taxpayer Clinics (LITCs)

LITCs provide tax advice and representation at little or no cost to low-income taxpayers who have a dispute with the IRS. Although they do not prepare returns, they can be a valuable resource if you’re facing a tax-related issue, such as an audit or appeal. LITCs can also provide education on taxpayer rights and responsibilities.

5. Military OneSource

Military OneSource offers free tax support to active-duty military personnel, reserve members, and their families. This service is available for both federal and state taxes. Additionally, MilTax, a suite of Military OneSource tax services, includes a free e-filing software designed for the military community.

Conclusion:

There’s no need to feel overwhelmed by your taxes when there are free resources available to help you navigate the complex world of income tax filing. Take advantage of the programs mentioned in this article and put your mind at ease knowing you’re not tackling your taxes alone.
