RAM vs. SSD: What’s the Best Upgrade for Your PC?

When it comes to upgrading your PC, two of the most popular options are increasing your RAM or upgrading your storage to an SSD. Both of these options can drastically improve your computer’s performance, but which one is the best choice for you?

RAM, or Random Access Memory, is the short-term memory of your computer. It temporarily stores data that your computer is currently using to run programs and applications. When you open a program, it is loaded into RAM so that your computer can quickly access it as needed. Increasing your RAM can improve your computer’s overall performance, especially when running multiple programs at once or more demanding applications such as video editing software or games.

SSD, or Solid State Drive, is a type of storage that uses flash memory to store data. Unlike traditional hard drives, SSDs have no moving parts, making them faster and more reliable. SSDs can significantly improve your computer’s boot time, application loading times, and file transfer speeds.

So, which one should you upgrade? The answer depends on what you use your computer for. If you use your computer for intensive tasks such as gaming, video editing, or running multiple programs at once, then increasing your RAM may be the best option for you. RAM is essential for running multiple programs at once, and increasing it can improve your computer’s multitasking capabilities.

On the other hand, if your computer takes a long time to boot up, frequently freezes or crashes, or has slow application loading times, then upgrading to an SSD may be the best choice for you. SSDs are much faster than traditional hard drives, making them ideal for improving your computer’s overall speed and performance.

However, if you have the budget, upgrading both your RAM and storage to an SSD can provide the best of both worlds. Increasing your RAM and upgrading to an SSD can drastically improve your computer’s performance, making it run smoother and faster.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
