Introduction

Intel has long been a pioneer in the mini PC space with its Next Unit of Computing (NUC) line, and the NUC 14 Pro, released in mid-December 2024, continues this tradition of innovation. Codenamed “Apex Canyon,” this latest iteration brings Intel’s 14th generation Core processors to the compact NUC form factor. With its powerful hardware, versatile connectivity options, and modular design, the NUC 14 Pro aims to be a one-size-fits-all solution for both home and business users seeking high performance in a small package.

Review

The star of the show in the Intel NUC 14 Pro is undoubtedly its processor. Our review unit, the NUC14ANKi7, comes equipped with an Intel Core i7-14700H, a 14-core, 20-thread powerhouse based on the Raptor Lake Refresh architecture. With a base clock of 2.5 GHz and boost speeds up to 5.5 GHz, this processor delivers desktop-class performance in a remarkably small form factor. In our benchmarks, the NUC 14 Pro consistently outperformed many larger desktop systems, especially in multi-threaded tasks.

Graphics performance is handled by the integrated Intel Iris Xe Graphics with 96 Execution Units. While not a replacement for a dedicated GPU, the Iris Xe is capable of handling light gaming, 4K video playback, and even some content creation tasks. For users needing more graphics horsepower, the NUC 14 Pro includes a Thunderbolt 4 port that supports external GPUs.

Memory options on the NUC 14 Pro are impressive, with support for up to 64 GB of DDR5 RAM running at 5600 MHz. Our review unit came with 32 GB, which provided smooth multitasking even with demanding applications. The use of DDR5 memory offers a noticeable performance boost compared to previous NUC generations.

Storage options are flexible and fast, with the NUC 14 Pro featuring two M.2 slots supporting PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSDs. This allows for high-speed RAID configurations or separation of operating system and data storage. Our unit came with a 1 TB NVMe SSD, which delivered lightning-fast boot times and quick application launches.

One of the standout features of the NUC 14 Pro is its modular design. The Compute Element, which contains the CPU, memory, and primary storage, can be easily replaced or upgraded. This modularity extends the lifespan of the system and provides flexibility for businesses and power users who may want to upgrade components over time.

Thermal management has always been a challenge for compact systems, but Intel has done an impressive job with the NUC 14 Pro. The cooling system, which includes a vapor chamber and a variable-speed fan, keeps the powerful components running at optimal temperatures even under heavy loads. During our stress tests, we observed minimal thermal throttling, and the system remained relatively quiet.

Connectivity is another strong suit of the NUC 14 Pro. It features Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 for fast and reliable wireless connections. On the wired front, the mini PC includes two 2.5 Gbps Ethernet ports, allowing for high-speed network connections or the creation of a small server setup. The array of ports is impressive, with multiple Thunderbolt 4 ports, USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports, HDMI 2.1, and DisplayPort 2.1 outputs. This allows the NUC 14 Pro to support up to four 4K displays simultaneously.

Intel has also focused on security with the NUC 14 Pro. It includes Intel vPro technology, which provides hardware-enhanced security features and remote management capabilities. There’s also a Trusted Platform Module (TPM 2.0) for secure boot and encryption functions.

The design of the NUC 14 Pro is sleek and professional, with a compact metal chassis that measures just 117 x 112 x 54mm. Despite its small size, the build quality is excellent, with a solid feel and no flexing or creaking. The front panel features customizable RGB lighting, adding a touch of personality to the otherwise understated design.

Power consumption is relatively efficient given the performance on offer. The NUC 14 Pro draws around 20W at idle and up to 100W under full load. While not the most energy-efficient mini PC on the market, it’s impressive considering the level of performance it delivers.

The NUC 14 Pro comes as a barebones kit, allowing users to choose their own memory, storage, and operating system. This flexibility is great for enthusiasts and businesses but may be intimidating for less tech-savvy users. However, many retailers offer pre-configured systems for those who prefer a ready-to-use solution.

Conclusion

The Intel NUC 14 Pro (NUC14ANKi7) Mini PC is a testament to how much computing power can be packed into a small form factor. Its combination of high-performance components, modular design, and comprehensive connectivity options make it suitable for a wide range of applications, from office productivity and content creation to edge computing and even some gaming.

While it may come at a premium price compared to some other mini PCs, the NUC 14 Pro justifies its cost with its cutting-edge technology, versatility, and potential for future upgrades. The modular design, in particular, sets it apart from many competitors, offering a level of flexibility that’s rare in the mini PC space.

For professionals, enthusiasts, and businesses looking for a compact yet powerful computing solution that can grow with their needs, the Intel NUC 14 Pro is an excellent choice. It represents the pinnacle of what’s currently possible in the mini PC form factor and sets a new standard for performance and versatility in small form factor computing.
