Pokémon Go has become a global phenomenon since its release in 2016, with millions of players around the world catching their favorite virtual creatures as they explore the real world. There was one major limitation, though:

players could not change their in-game usernames. Fortunately, Niantic has finally addressed this issue, and it’s now possible for players to modify their names. In this article, we’ll guide you through the process.

1. Update to the latest version of Pokémon Go

Before starting the name change process, make sure you have updated Pokémon Go to the latest version available for your device. This will ensure that you have access to the new name change feature.

2. Launch Pokémon Go and tap on your Trainer Profile

Open Pokémon Go on your device and tap on your Trainer Profile located at the bottom-left corner of the screen. The profile button is shaped like a small avatar icon.

3. Access the settings menu

While viewing your Trainer Profile, you will see a cogwheel icon in the top right corner of the screen – tap on it to access the game’s settings menu.

4. Tap on “Change Nickname”

Scroll down through the settings list until you see the “Change Nickname” option. Tap on it to start the process.

5. Enter your desired new nickname

In this step, you’ll be prompted to input a new nickname for your account. Take your time when deciding on your new moniker, as choosing an inappropriate or offensive name can result in account restrictions or even suspension by Niantic.

6. Confirming your new nickname

After entering your chosen nickname, tap “OK” to submit it for approval by Niantic’s system. If your new nickname doesn’t violate any rules and isn’t already taken by another player, it will be approved immediately.

Please note that although Niantic now allows Pokémon Go players to change their usernames, it’s essential to choose your new name wisely. That’s because you are only allowed to change your nickname once, with no options for further alterations. Ensuring that your name best represents you as a player is crucial for a satisfying and enjoyable experience in the world of Pokémon Go.

With this newfound freedom to choose your identity in Pokémon Go, we hope you’ll find it even more engaging and immersive as you continue to explore the world and fill your Pokédex with rare and powerful Pokémon. Happy hunting!
