Pixel 8 Pro Review: Not the Google Phone I Hoped It Would Be

The Google Pixel 8 Pro arrives with high expectations, as Google’s flagship phone offering traditionally showcases the best of Android. However, this year’s model, while full of potential, leaves a lot to be desired.

Design-wise, the Pixel 8 Pro follows the trend of minimal bezels and a punch-hole camera. The 6.5-inch QHD+ display is sharp and vibrant with excellent color accuracy, but it doesn’t stand out from competitors that now offer dynamic refresh rates or more immersive curves.

Under the hood, the upgraded Tensor processor promises improved AI capabilities and machine learning tasks. While there are moments where this intelligence shines – particularly in voice recognition and on-device translation services – the real-world performance improvements over its predecessor are not as palpable.

The camera setup on the Pixel 8 Pro includes a primary, ultra-wide, and telephoto lens. Google’s computational photography is still top-notch, with particular prowess in low-light conditions. Nonetheless, competitors have caught up significantly, matching or even surpassing Google’s photo quality.

Battery life is another gripe. Despite having a large battery capacity on paper, the Pixel 8 Pro struggles to make it through a full day of intense use – something rival phones manage without issue.

Software, ordinarily Google’s strong suit with timely updates and clean UI, feels underwhelming this time around. The exclusive features added to Android for the Pixel don’t feel particularly game-changing, and some annoying bugs have sullied the overall user experience upon release.

All things considered, the Pixel 8 Pro doesn’t quite hit the high notes expected of a premium smartphone from Google. It does most things well enough but fails to excel in areas where it traditionally led. With its steep price tag taken into account, those looking for a definitive Android experience may find themselves looking at other manufacturers.

In conclusion, while I appreciate the vision behind Google’s Pixel 8 Pro – taking smartphone intelligence further – it unfortunately falls short in execution. As such, it isn’t quite the Google phone I had hoped for this year.
