Nintendo Switch Online Review: An Essential Purchase, but Skip the Upgrades

Nintendo Switch Online has become an integral part of the gaming experience for Nintendo Switch owners. Priced at just $19.99 per year, it offers numerous benefits, including online multiplayer, Save Data Cloud backup, access to classic NES and SNES games, and exclusive offers. However, as we delve into this review, we’ll discuss why it’s an essential purchase but also make a case to skip the pricier upgrades.

### Online Multiplayer

One of the primary reasons to invest in Nintendo Switch Online is online multiplayer. If you enjoy playing games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or Splatoon 2 with friends, a subscription is required to access this feature. The service delivers stable connections and smooth gameplay experiences, making your online battles more enjoyable.

### Save Data Cloud Backup

Nintendo Switch Online also introduces the much-requested Save Data Cloud backup feature for supported games. This allows you to keep your save data safe on Nintendo servers. If you happen to lose your Switch or get a new one, your saved progress can be easily retrieved. This feature is a huge relief for gamers who invest considerable time and effort into their favorite titles.

### Classic NES and SNES games

For fans of nostalgia or those looking to explore classic gaming history, Nintendo Switch Online provides a growing library of beloved NES and SNES games. From iconic titles like Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda and Donkey Kong to hidden gems such as Demon’s Crest, there’s plenty to keep you entertained.

### Exclusive Offers

The final significant benefit of Nintendo Switch Online is the exclusive offers for subscribers. These range from discounts on selected digital games in the eShop to exclusive items in popular titles like Animal Crossing: New Horizons. While these offers aren’t always groundbreaking, they still add value to your subscription.

### Upgrades: Are they worth it?

While the core Nintendo Switch Online package is worth every penny, the same can’t be said for the pricier upgrades, primarily Nintendo Switch Expansion Pack. Priced at $49.99 per year (or $79.99 per family plan), this upgrade offers additional benefits such as access to N64 and SEGA Genesis games and the upcoming Animal Crossing: New Horizons Happy Home Paradise DLC. However, many have criticized its price point, considering the limited number of available games.

For most consumers, access to N64 and SEGA Genesis games might not hold enough value to justify the price increase, especially if you’re not interested in Animal Crossing’s DLC (which costs $24.99 on its own).

In conclusion, Nintendo Switch Online presents an essential purchase for any Switch owner due to its online multiplayer, Save Data Cloud backup, classic game library, and exclusive offers. However, unless you’re a die-hard fan of N64 or SEGA Genesis titles or are keen on purchasing the Animal Crossing: New Horizons Happy Home Paradise DLC, it’s wise to skip the upgrades and stick to the base subscription.
