The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is considering a forced recall of 52 million ARC car airbag inflators due to potential safety hazards. This move comes after several reported incidents involving faulty airbag inflators, which have been linked to numerous injuries and even fatalities.

The ARC Automotive airbag inflators in question are currently being used in automobiles from various manufacturers. These inflators, which are responsible for deploying the vehicle’s airbags during a crash, have been found to potentially malfunction or deteriorate over time. Consequently, this can cause the airbags to deploy with excessive force or fail to deploy at all, posing serious risks to passengers and drivers.

In recent years, there has been a surge in investigations and subsequent recalls related to faulty airbag inflators. Most notably, the Japanese manufacturer Takata was involved in the largest-ever recall of its kind due to potentially lethal airbag inflators. The issue with Takata airbags caused at least 17 deaths and more than 200 injuries worldwide.

While ARC Automotive has not had any known fatalities linked directly to their airbag inflator issues, the company’s products could potentially pose similar risks as those found within Takata’s recalled components. With NHTSA closely monitoring the situation, it is evident that safety is of paramount importance.

Further investigation by NHTSA could lead the organization to determine whether voluntary recalls initiated by automakers that use ARC inflators have been adequate in addressing the problem. If not satisfied with voluntary recall measures, NHTSA has the authority to issue a forced recall of all affected vehicles at the expense of the manufacturers.

To date, approximately 8 million vehicles fitted with ARC inflators have been voluntarily recalled by automakers due to potential malfunctions. However, if NHTSA moves forward with a forced recall, this figure might climb significantly to over 50 million vehicles.
