New to Procreate? Here Are Tips to Start Using Layers

If you’re new to Procreate, a digital art application designed for iPad, you might find the concept of layers somewhat confusing. But don’t worry, once you understand how layers work, you’ll quickly realize how essential they are to creating stunning artwork.

Layers are essentially transparent sheets that you can stack on top of each other to create your artwork. Each layer can contain a separate element of your artwork without affecting the other layers. For example, you might have one layer for a background, another for text and a third for your main illustration.

Here are some tips to help you start using layers in Procreate:

1. Start with a clean slate: Before you start adding layers, make sure your canvas is empty. You can delete any existing layers by swiping left on them and clicking the “delete” button.

2. Add a new layer: To add a new layer, simply click the “layers” button on the top right-hand corner of the screen and then click the “+” button. You can then name your layer and start drawing.

3. Work from the back to the front: When working with multiple layers, it’s easier to work from the back to the front. This means you should start with your background layer and work your way up to your final layer.

4. Use the opacity slider: The opacity slider allows you to adjust the transparency of individual layers, which can be useful if you want to create a subtle effect or blend layers together.

5. Merge layers: If you want to combine multiple layers into one, select the layers you want to merge and then click the “merge down” button.

6. Lock layers: Locking layers prevents them from being edited or moved, which can be useful if you have finished an element and don’t want to accidentally change it.

7. Use reference layers: Reference layers allow you to place an image or sketch as a guide on a separate layer, which can be helpful when drawing intricate details or needing accurate proportions.

In conclusion, layers are a powerful tool in Procreate that allow you to create complex and detailed artwork. By following these tips, you’ll be able to start using layers to improve the quality of your art in no time. Happy creating!
