New 3DS XL vs. New 2DS XL: Which is the Best Portable Nintendo?

For those looking to get their hands on the latest and greatest in portable gaming from Nintendo, two options stick out among the rest: the New 3DS XL and the New 2DS XL. While both devices are excellent choices for fans of Nintendo’s gaming library, each one comes with its own set of strengths and weaknesses.

First and foremost, it’s worth noting that both the New 3DS XL and the New 2DS XL boast the same processing power and capabilities, meaning that the actual gaming experience on either device is more or less identical. However, there are a few key differences that set these two portables apart.

The New 3DS XL, for instance, features a three-dimensional display that adjusts based on the angle and movement of the device. While this 3D effect can be a neat addition to certain games (such as Super Mario 3D Land or The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds), it’s largely a matter of preference and can be turned off for those who don’t enjoy it.

Additionally, the New 3DS XL comes with a built-in NFC reader, allowing players to use amiibo figures to interact with their games. If you’re a collector of these figurines or just enjoy that added level of interactivity, this feature may be a selling point for you.

On the other side of the coin, the New 2DS XL is a bit more budget-friendly than its 3D counterpart. And while it may lack that eye-popping visual feature of the New 3DS XL, it makes up for it by offering a sleek, clamshell design and a large, easy-to-view screen.

Another major benefit of the New 2DS XL is the fact that it’s, well, a 2DS – meaning that kids or those prone to motion sickness won’t have to worry about any possible discomfort from using the device’s 3D function. This makes it a great choice for younger gamers or anyone who may be sensitive to that sort of thing.

In the end, deciding between the New 3DS XL and the New 2DS XL ultimately comes down to your personal preferences and priorities. If you’re a big fan of the 3D feature, or if you collect amiibo figures, the New 3DS XL may be the way to go. But if you’re looking for a more affordable option that still offers a great gaming experience (and won’t give you any headaches), the New 2DS XL may be the perfect fit for you.
