Moto G Stylus 5G Review: Great Specs For $500 But Limited Software Updates

Motorola is back with another addition to its popular G series lineup — the Moto G Stylus 5G. At a competitive price point of $500, the smartphone promises to deliver an impressive set of specs and features, catering to the mid-range market. However, amidst all its glory lies a drawback: limited software updates.

Design and Display

The Moto G Stylus 5G sports a sleek and modern design, featuring a 6.8-inch FHD+ Max Vision display with a 1080 x 2400 resolution, ensuring clear and vibrant visuals. The display is HDR10-compatible — perfect for binge-watching your favorite shows. The rear-mounted fingerprint sensor and water-repellent coating are added bonuses.

Performance

Under the hood, the smartphone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 chipset, along with options for either 4GB or 6GB of RAM. This combination offers satisfactory performance for routine tasks as well as gaming (although not at the level of flagship devices). With 128GB or 256GB of internal storage and support for expandable memory up to 1TB via microSD card, there’s no shortage of space to store your multimedia files.

Cameras

The Moto G Stylus 5G does not disappoint in the photography department. It houses a quad-camera setup at the back, including a versatile 48MP main sensor for detailed shots, an 8MP ultrawide lens to capture broader scenes, a 5MP macro lens to shoot close-ups, and a depth sensor for portrait mode effects. For selfies and video calling, there’s a 16MP camera in a hole-punch display.

Battery Life

One standout feature of this mid-range smartphone is its battery life. Equipped with a massive 5000mAh battery, it promises up to two days of usage on a single charge. The device also supports 10W fast charging, although this might not be as quick as flagship models.

5G Connectivity and Stylus

As the name suggests, the Moto G Stylus 5G comes with 5G connectivity, future-proofing your smartphone experience. The included stylus is designed for better precision and a smooth operation, allowing you to unleash your creativity or simply make detailed notes.

Limited Software Updates

While the Moto G Stylus 5G boasts a plethora of admirable features, the major drawback lies in its limited software updates. Motorola has announced only one Android version update for the device (Android 12) and two years of security patches. This lack of ongoing support may deter potential buyers who prioritize future-proof smartphones.

Verdict

The Moto G Stylus 5G is undoubtedly an attractive mid-range smartphone with great specs and features for its $500 price tag. Its powerful battery life, competent performance, and 5G connectivity make it worth considering for users seeking a well-rounded device without breaking the bank. However, with the limitation in software updates, potential buyers must weigh their priorities when making a decision.
