Linear vs. Tactile vs. Clicky Switches: What’s the Difference, and What Should You Choose?

When it comes to choosing a keyboard, one of the most important decisions you’ll need to make is what type of switch to use. Today, we’ll take a look at the differences between linear, tactile, and clicky switches to help you make the right choice for your needs.

Linear Switches

Linear switches offer a smooth and consistent keystroke from beginning to end. They lack any tactile feedback or “click” sound when the key is pressed, making them quieter than their tactile and clicky counterparts. Because they don’t provide any feedback, they are popular among gamers who need to double tap keys quickly and precisely.

Tactile Switches

Tactile switches provide a noticeable bump in the middle of the keystroke. This bump provides tactile feedback, letting you know that the key has been activated without having to fully press it down. Tactile switches are popular among typists who need to feel a response when they press a key, and they are also great for gamers who want precision in their keystrokes.

Clicky Switches

Clicky switches provide a noticeable tactile and audible click sound when the key is pressed. The sound and feel of these switches are often compared to that of a typewriter. These switches are popular among typists who enjoy the audible feedback and satisfying keypresses, as well as gamers who want an audible response to their keystrokes.

Which Switch Should You Choose?

When deciding between linear, tactile, and clicky switches, there are a few things you should consider. First, consider how you plan to use your keyboard. Are you a gamer who needs quick and precise keystrokes, or a typist who wants feedback from their keys? Do you value a quiet workspace or do you need audible feedback? Each switch has its strengths and weaknesses, so it’s important to consider your specific needs.

Another important factor to consider is personal preference. Trying out different switches is the best way to determine which one feels best to you. Most keyboard retailers offer sampler packs that let you test out different switch types before making a purchase.
