Kuato? ‘Rick and Morty’ Parodies One of the Best Sci-Fi Movies Ever Made

In an episode that masterfully exemplifies the irreverent and referential humor of “Rick and Morty,” creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland pay homage to one of science fiction’s most influential films, “Total Recall.” The movie, directed by Paul Verhoeven, is known for its mind-bending narrative and iconic characters, including the enigmatic Kuato, a symbol of the rebellion against a corrupt regime on Mars.

Kuato, in “Total Recall,” represents the heart of rebellion—literally and figuratively—as he is a mutant leader conjoined with his brother George. This visceral element is adeptly parodied in the “Rick and Morty” episode where the concept of a secret hidden within one’s self takes on a more ludicrous angle. “Total Rickall,” Season 2, Episode 4, sees alien parasites embedding themselves in the characters’ memories, assuming a variety of bizarre forms. While there isn’t a direct character parallel to Kuato in this episode or throughout the “Rick and Morty” series, the spirit of ingenious sci-fi subversions remains a series trademark.

The parody extends beyond characters to the entirety of sci-fi culture. The show’s universe hopping shenanigans are reminiscent of “Total Recall’s” reality-questioning escapades. Rick Sanchez, with his no-holds-barred approach to life’s philosophic quandaries and adventurism, could well be seen as an amoral, interdimensional counterpart to Douglas Quaid/Hauser—the protagonist seeking truth in a manufactured reality.

In its pastiche-style tribute to “Total Recall,” “Rick and Morty” not only entertains its audience but engages them in a deeper dialogue concerning identity and reality—a true hallmark of thought-provoking science fiction. The continuous nods to icons like Kuato within the manic multiverse that Harmon and Roiland have created ensure that while parodying these classics, they also honor them, contributing richly to the pantheon of sci-fi greatness.
