Is My Phone Waterproof? IP68, IPX8 Ratings Explained

Introduction:

Are you curious about whether or not your phone is waterproof? With the increasing popularity of water-resistant and waterproof smartphones, it’s critical to understand what exactly those ratings mean. In this article, we will provide an in-depth explanation of IP68 and IPX8 ratings so you can be well-informed when purchasing a new phone.

What are IP Ratings?

IP (Ingress Protection) ratings are a standardized international system that categorizes how well an electronic device can withstand dust and water exposure. The first digit in the rating represents a device’s resistance to dust particles, ranging from 0 (no protection) to 6 (maximum protection). The second digit indicates water resistance, ranging from 0 (no protection) to 8 (maximum protection).

IP68 Rating:

An IP68 rating is among the highest available for mobile phones today. The “6” denotes complete dust-tightness, preventing any harmful deposits of dust or other particulate matter from entering the device. The “8” signifies a solid level of water-resistance and the ability to operate while submerged in water up to a specific depth, which can vary depending on the manufacturer’s specifications. Generally, devices with an IP68 rating can be submerged in up to 1.5 meters of water for approximately 30 minutes without sustaining any damage.

IPX8 Rating:

An IPX8 rating focuses solely on water resistance. Unlike the IP68 rating which discusses both dust and water protection, the X in “IPX8” denotes that there is no specific classification for dust protection. Devices with an IPX8 rating offer superior water-resistance compared to lower ratings and can often withstand immersion in up to 3 meters of water for extended periods, usually around an hour or more.

How do I know if my phone has either of these ratings?

To determine whether your phone has an IP68 or IPX8 rating, you can check the manufacturer’s specifications or look it up on their website. If your smartphone case is water-resistant, these certifications might be printed on the packaging or labeled on the case itself.

Limitations and Precautions:

While devices with an IP68 or IPX8 rating offer substantial protection against water exposure, it’s essential to understand their limitations. For example, these certifications apply only to freshwater, not saltwater, chlorinated water in pools, or highly pressurized water. Moreover, these ratings are not a guarantee against damage and should not encourage risky behavior with your device, such as using it underwater for extended periods.

Conclusion:

Understanding IP68 and IPX8 ratings is crucial when evaluating your phone’s potential resistance to dust and water exposure. Although these certifications indicate impressive levels of protection, it’s essential to keep in mind that they have limitations. By knowing your device’s capabilities and taking proper precautions, you can ensure that you’re taking full advantage of your phone’s design without compromising its safety.
