IHBAS Launches DM Course in Geriatric Mental Health for 2025-26

The Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS) in New Delhi has taken a significant step towards improving mental health care for India’s aging population by introducing a pioneering super-specialty DM course in Geriatric Mental Health. This course, which will commence in the academic session of 2025–26, positions IHBAS as only the third institution in the country to offer such advanced training, following in the footsteps of King George’s Medical University (KGMU) and the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS).

The Growing Need for Geriatric Mental Health Care

As India’s population ages, the prevalence of mental health issues among the elderly has emerged as a pressing concern. A report from the National Programme for Health Care of the Elderly (NPHCE) indicates that around 20% of older adults experience varying degrees of mental health challenges, including depression, anxiety, and cognitive disorders. Despite these statistics, awareness and resources for mental health care in this demographic remain alarmingly low.

Course Highlights and Structure

The newly introduced DM course will equip specialists with the necessary skills to diagnose and manage mental health conditions specifically in older adults. The curriculum will cover a wide array of topics, including:

  • Assessment and diagnosis of geriatric mental health conditions
  • Intervention strategies and therapeutic techniques
  • Research methodologies pertinent to geriatric psychology
  • Long-term management and rehabilitation of elderly patients
  • Ethical and legal considerations in geriatric care

With two students already enrolled, the program promises to create a new generation of experts focused on improving mental health outcomes for the elderly.

IHBAS’s Comprehensive Approach

In conjunction with the launch of the DM course, IHBAS has established a dedicated Department of Geriatric Mental Health. This department signifies a crucial expansion from their previously limited outpatient services, which operated only twice a week since April 2022. The newly formed department will provide:

  • Full inpatient and outpatient care
  • Teaching and training for healthcare professionals
  • Active research initiatives aimed at understanding and addressing geriatric mental health issues

This comprehensive approach addresses not only immediate mental health needs but also emphasizes the importance of education and research in the field. By fostering a robust training environment, IHBAS aims to enhance the quality of care provided to the elderly.

Challenges in Geriatric Mental Health

Despite the introduction of this course and the expansion of services, several challenges persist in the domain of geriatric mental health in India:

  • Stigma: Mental health issues in the elderly often carry a stigma that prevents individuals from seeking help.
  • Lack of Awareness: Many families may not recognize the signs of mental health conditions, leading to delays in diagnosis and treatment.
  • Resource Constraints: There is a shortage of trained professionals in geriatric mental health, which exacerbates the issue.
  • Policy Gaps: Existing healthcare policies may not adequately address the specific needs of the elderly population.

The establishment of this DM course is a proactive measure to combat these challenges by producing trained specialists who can advocate for the mental health needs of older adults.

Impact on India’s Elderly Population

The implementation of the DM course is expected to have a profound impact on the care and management of mental health issues among the elderly. With trained professionals equipped to provide specialized care, early diagnosis, and effective management strategies, the quality of life for many older adults can be significantly improved. Furthermore, the focus on research will lead to a better understanding of the unique challenges faced by this demographic, paving the way for innovative treatment approaches.

A Call to Action

The launch of the DM course in Geriatric Mental Health at IHBAS represents a crucial step towards addressing the often-overlooked mental health needs of the elderly in India. As the country grapples with an aging population, initiatives like this one are essential in ensuring that mental health care evolves alongside demographic changes.

It is imperative for healthcare policymakers, institutions, and families to recognize the importance of mental health care for the elderly and to support initiatives that aim to enhance their well-being. As India continues to develop its healthcare infrastructure, addressing geriatric mental health should be a priority to ensure a healthier, happier aging population.
