As a self-proclaimed mac and cheese enthusiast, I set out to determine the king of boxed mac & cheese brands. I tried five different brands that are readily available at most grocery stores. Each brand was prepared according to package instructions without any additional ingredients or alterations. The contenders were Kraft Original Macaroni & Cheese, Velveeta Shells & Cheese, Annie’s Homegrown Macaroni & Cheese, Horizon Organic Macaroni & Cheddar Cheese, and Trader Joe’s Organic Mac ‘n Cheese.

The evaluation was based on three criteria: taste, texture, and creaminess. Price and ease of preparation were noted but not key factors in the final decision. Each brand brought something unique to the table, but the goal was to find an overall winner that satisfied the classic mac and cheese craving.

Kraft Original Macaroni & Cheese, renowned for its nostalgic flavor, offered a classic taste that many associate with their childhood. However, it fell short on the creaminess front.

Velveeta Shells & Cheese stood out with its velvety cheese sauce and unique shell pasta that held the sauce well. It was by far the creamiest of all the options.

Annie’s Homegrown provided an organic alternative with a milder cheese flavor which appealed to those who prefer a less artificial taste; its texture was firm and satisfying.

Horizon Organic also provided an organic option with a decent cheddar flavor but lacked in both creaminess and richness when compared to others.

Trader Joe’s Organic Mac ‘n Cheese offered a balance between a creamy sauce and a wholesome cheese flavor but didn’t particularly excel in any category.

After tasting all five brands, Velveeta Shells & Cheese emerged as the best boxed mac & cheese. Its undeniable creaminess combined with the perfect shell pasta that captured plenty of cheese with every bite made it stand out from its competitors. While some might argue it departs from the traditional mac and cheese experience with its almost-too-perfect cheese sauce consistency, it still delivered the most satisfyingly cheesy experience.

This experiment proves that while there are many variations of boxed mac & cheese on the market today, when it comes to overall satisfaction – balancing taste, texture, and that sought-after creamy indulgence – Velveeta Shells & Cheese leads the pack. Whether enjoyed as a quick meal or indulgent snack, it’s clear why this brand has won over so many devotees in the ultimate comfort food category.
