I Tried 41 Canned Mocktails — And the Best Ones Were So Surprising

The world of mocktails is vast and varied, offering a treasure trove of flavors for those who prefer their cocktails without the kick of alcohol. With the growing trend in mindfulness and sobriety, canned mocktails have surged in popularity, providing a convenient and non-alcoholic alternative for social gatherings, parties, or a relaxing night in. To navigate this burgeoning market, I embarked on a flavorful journey to try 41 different canned mocktail brands. The results were not only enlightening but also quite surprising.

Starting with well-known brands in the market, I had certain expectations about what flavors would impress me the most. Typically, these beverages aim to mimic their alcoholic counterparts with ingredients that intrigue the palate. However, it wasn’t the traditional mojito or piña colada inspired drinks that stole my heart; it was the unique and innovative concoctions that rose to prominence.

Take for instance ‘Herbal Bliss’, a canned mocktail that blends aromatic herbs such as rosemary, thyme, and basil with a hint of citrus sparkle. The complexity provided by these savory notes was both refreshing and unexpected. It was a bold departure from the sweet fruit punches that dominate the mocktail scene and provided a nuanced sipping experience that could easily compete with any gourmet cocktail.

Another unexpected standout was ‘Spice & Smoke’, which offered a liquid journey through smoky tea notes harmoniously paired with piquant spices such as cardamom and anise. The depth in flavor truly captivates one’s senses and offers an exotic twist to non-alcoholic beverages. Not typically found on the average drink menu, this daring blend was a clear winner for its originality and full-bodied taste.

The biggest surprise came from ‘Oceanic Fizz’ – a concoction that managed to capture the essence of sea breeze with subtle hints of seaweed extract matched with cucumber freshness and a splash of saltiness. It’s evocative of standing by the shore without departing from your living room couch—a true innovation in flavor profile that expands what we expect from non-alcoholic drinks.

Through this tasting adventure, I discovered canned mocktails offer much more than just sweetened carbonated beverages—they can be complex, sophisticated, and surprising. Brands taking risks with unusual ingredients are setting new standards for what a non-alcoholic beverage can encompass.

In conclusion, the experiment revealed that there’s an exciting world beyond traditional flavor expectations in canned mocktails. Those showcasing creativity and unorthodox combinations came out on top. My advice? Next time you’re perusing the aisles for a non-alcoholic treat, don’t shy away from unconventional choices—you might just uncover your new favorite sip.
