How to Windmill: 12 Steps
Step 1: Warm up
Before attempting any new dance move, it’s crucial to warm up your body. Stretch for a few minutes to prepare your muscles and prevent injuries.
Step 2: Find a flat surface
Choose a flat and open space with enough room for you to move around comfortably. A hardwood or vinyl floor is ideal for practicing windmills.
Step 3: Master the basic stance
Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, bend your knees slightly, and place your hands on your hips. This stance will help you maintain balance while executing the windmill.
Step 4: Practice the “stab” position
Place one hand on the ground with your fingers pointing towards your feet. Your opposite elbow should be locked and pressing firmly into your hip bone.
Step 5: Lean into the stab
Shift your weight onto the hand on the ground while keeping your other hand on your hip. Use your legs and core muscles to maintain balance as you lean into the stab position.
Step 6: Kick off
Lift one leg into the air, bending it slightly at the knee, and then kick off with the other leg. This motion will create momentum for spinning in a windmill pattern.
Step 7: Tuck in
As you start spinning, tuck in both legs towards your chest. This will decrease friction with the ground and allow you to spin more smoothly.
Step 8: Maintain head placement
Keep your head down and chin tucked in towards your chest throughout the entire movement. This will help you maintain balance as you spin in the windmill.
Step 9: Follow through with arm movement
Use one arm to sweep around as you spin, maintaining an even rotation. The sweeping motion keeps you revolving in a controlled manner.
Step 10: Practice at a slow pace
To build confidence and muscle memory, start by practicing windmills slowly. Gradually increase the speed as you become more comfortable with the movements.
Step 11: Develop smooth transitions
Work on transitioning seamlessly between each step of the windmill, as this will create a continuous and fluid dance move.
Step 12: Practice, practice, practice
The windmill is a challenging breakdance move, but with practice and perseverance, you’ll be able to master it and impress your friends and fellow dancers.
