How to Weave a Willow Basket
Weaving a willow basket is an age-old craft that not only produces beautiful, functional pieces but also connects you with the natural world and the ancient art of basketry. This tutorial provides a step-by-step guide for weaving a willow basket, perfect for beginners or experienced weavers alike.
Materials:
- Freshly cut willow rods, in various thicknesses
- A bucket of water for soaking the willows
- Knife or pruning shears for trimming the willows
- A flat surface for working on, such as a table or the ground
Step 1: Harvest and prepare the willow rods
Depending on your location, you may be able to harvest your own willow rods. Use a knife or pruning shears to cut the branches at an angle. Remove any leaves and thin side branches and gather a variety of thicknesses.
Step 2: Soak the willows
Soak the willow rods in water for at least an hour, ideally overnight. This helps make them more flexible and easier to work with during the weaving process.
Step 3: Create the base structure
Select four thick rods of equal length to create the base spokes. Lay out two of these spokes horizontally on your flat surface, parallel with each other, about half their length apart. Place the remaining two spokes vertically across these horizontal spokes in an alternating pattern, creating an evenly spaced grid.
Step 4: Begin weaving
Choose thinner rods to start weaving with, called the weavers. Starting at one corner of your base grid, weave over one spoke and under another, moving diagonally across your grid base. Continue weaving diagonally until there is no room left on that side of the grid. Repeat this process from all starting corners to create a tight diagonal weave pattern over your entire base.
Step 5: Create the sides
Take another set of four thicker rods and push them into the base weave at equal intervals, along with the existing rods. These will become the new spokes for the sides of your basket. Gently bend each rod upward at a 90-degree angle.
Step 6: Weave the sides
Using flexible, thinner willow rods as weavers, start weaving around the outside of your bent spokes in an over-under pattern, to create a sturdy vertical wall for your basket. Continue this process until you reach your desired height.
Step 7: Trim and tuck
When you have woven your desired height, trim the excess lengths of spokes above the final layer of weaving. Ideally, leave enough length to tuck these ends back into the weave, securing them in place.
Step 8: Finish with a border
Choose a border style that suits your preferences. You can create a simple border by bending and tucking the remaining lengths of willow back through their corresponding weave below, or get more creative with intricate patterns and loops.
Step 9: Allow to dry
Place your completed willow basket on a flat surface to dry. This may take several days depending on factors like humidity and air circulation.
Congratulations! You’ve just woven your very own willow basket. Now let your imagination run wild with different shapes, sizes, and decorative finishes as you explore this versatile craft further.
