How to Use Your Mac’s Safe Boot Option

The Safe Boot option on your Mac is a feature that allows you to start your system with only the basic software and drivers so that you can troubleshoot problems that might be preventing it from starting up normally. Sometimes, third-party applications or system updates can cause conflicts or corrupt files that can cause startup issues, and the Safe Boot option can be an effective way to resolve those issues.

If you’re having trouble with your Mac, follow these steps to boot your system in Safe Mode:

1. Restart your Mac

Click on the Apple menu () in the upper-left corner of your screen and select Restart… Alternatively, you can press and hold the power button until your Mac turns off, then press it again to turn it back on.

2. Press and hold the Shift key

As soon as you see the Apple logo on your screen, press and hold the Shift key until you see the login screen appear. This can take a few moments, so be patient. You’ll know you’re in Safe Mode when you see the words “Safe Boot” in the upper-right corner of your screen.

3. Log in

Once you’re at the login screen, enter your username and password as you normally would to access your Mac. Keep in mind that the startup process may take longer than usual, as your Mac is running in Safe Mode and is loading only the essential software to function.

4. Use your Mac

You can now use your Mac as you normally would, but with some limitations. Safe Mode disables most third-party software, such as anti-virus programs, so you may notice some applications not functioning as they usually would. Additionally, certain features, such as your Mac’s speaker audio, may not work at all.

5. Exit Safe Mode

When you’re finished using your Mac in Safe Mode, you can simply restart it again. Click on the Apple menu () in the upper-left corner of your screen and select Restart. Your Mac will now boot up normally, and you should be able to access all of your applications and features as usual.

In conclusion, the Safe Boot option on your Mac is a useful tool to troubleshoot problems that might be preventing your system from starting up normally. By following the steps outlined above, you’ll be able to boot your Mac in Safe Mode and identify any issues that may be causing your Mac to freeze or crash.
