How to Use Tally: 12 Steps
Tally is a widely-used accounting software that simplifies the process of recording financial transactions, generating reports, and managing taxes for businesses. If you’re new to Tally or need a refresher, this step-by-step guide will help you get started.
1. Install Tally.ERP 9: You can download Tally.ERP 9 from their official website and install it on your computer. Choose the right version for your business needs (Silver for single-user or Gold for multi-user).
2. Activate the software: After installation, you need to activate the software using the serial number and activation key provided at the time of purchase.
3. Create a company: Once activated, go to “Gateway of Tally” > “Select/Create Company” and fill in the necessary company details such as name, address, currency symbol, and financial year beginning.
4. Configure features: Customise your accounting setup by enabling features like inventory management, payroll, statutory reporting, etc., under “F11: Features”.
5. Configure tax details: Set up tax details like GSTIN, VAT and TDS by going to “F11” > “Statutory & Taxation”. This will enable auto-computation of taxes on transactions.
6. Create ledger accounts: Under “Accounts Info”, create ledgers for various accounts such as customers, suppliers, expenses, income, bank accounts etc., with appropriate groups and opening balances if any.
7. Create inventory masters: If dealing with inventory, under “Inventory Info”, create stock items, units of measure (UoM), stock groups and Godowns (locations) to manage your stock effectively.
8. Record transactions: Enter day-to-day transactions like sales invoices, purchase orders, receipts etc., in the respective vouchers under “Accounting Vouchers” or “Inventory Vouchers”.
9. Utilize shortcuts: Learn and use Tally shortcuts (like Alt+C for creating a new ledger, Alt+P to print a voucher) to improve your efficiency while working with the software.
10. Generate reports: Analyze your business performance and tax liabilities by generating reports such as Profit & Loss Account, Balance Sheet, Stock Summary, GST report etc., from “Gateway of Tally” > “Display”.
11. Perform regular backups: Ensure data safety by taking regular backups of your company data. Go to “Gateway of Tally” > “Backup” and specify the destination folder for saving the backup file.
12. Update the software: Keep your Tally software updated to enjoy the latest features and statutory updates released by the company. Check for updates under “Help” > “Check for Updates”.
