How to Uninstall McAfee

McAfee antivirus software is one of the most popular antivirus applications in the market. However, you may want to uninstall McAfee from your system for various reasons, such as switching to a different antivirus application or upgrading to the latest version of McAfee. Uninstalling McAfee can be challenging, as it can leave behind some files and registry entries. In this article, we will walk you through the steps on how to uninstall McAfee completely from your system.

Step One: Use the McAfee Removal Tool

McAfee has developed a tool for removing all traces of the software from your system. It is called the McAfee Consumer Product Removal tool (MCPR). You can download the tool from the McAfee website.

Once you have downloaded the tool, run it as an administrator. You may need to enter your password to allow the tool to make changes to your system.

The MCPR tool will scan your system and uninstall all McAfee products, including antivirus, firewall, and other applications. This is the most reliable way to uninstall McAfee from your system.

Step Two: Remove McAfee SecurityCenter

After using the MCPR tool, you should also remove the McAfee SecurityCenter application from your system. To do this, go to “Control Panel” from the “Start” button and click on “Programs and Features.”

Find the McAfee SecurityCenter application in the list of installed programs and click on “Uninstall.” Follow the prompts to uninstall the application completely.

Step Three: Remove McAfee Entries from the Windows Registry

The Windows registry is a database that contains information about your system, including software and hardware settings. Even after using the MCPR tool and removing the SecurityCenter application, some registry entries related to McAfee may still exist. To remove these entries, you need to edit the registry.

Before editing the registry, it is important to make a backup of the registry in case anything goes wrong during the process.

To access the registry editor, press the “Windows key + R” on your keyboard and type “regedit” in the Run window. This will open the registry editor.

Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\McAfee

Right-click on the McAfee folder and click on “Delete.” You may need to enter your password to confirm the deletion.

After deleting the McAfee folder, navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\McAfee

Repeat the same process of right-clicking on the McAfee folder and clicking on “Delete.”

Once you have deleted both of these keys, close the registry editor.

Step Four: Restart Your System

After uninstalling McAfee completely from your system, it is important to restart your system. This will ensure that all of the changes are applied, and any remaining files or registry entries are removed.

Conclusion

By following these steps, you can completely uninstall McAfee from your system. It is important to use the MCPR tool to ensure that all McAfee products are removed, and then remove the SecurityCenter application and registry entries manually. Once you have completed these steps, restart your system to make sure that no traces of McAfee remain on your system.
