How to Tube Feed a Puppy: 15 Steps

Tube feeding is a vital skill for anyone who raises puppies. It can help save the lives of newborn puppies that are not able to nurse properly or are orphaned. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to tube feed a puppy safely and effectively:

.Consult with a veterinarian: Before attempting tube feeding, seek advice from a licensed veterinarian who can provide guidance and support throughout the process.

.Prepare the appropriate supplies: You’ll need a feeding tube (silicone or rubber), syringe, scale, puppy milk replacer, and warm water.

.Mix the puppy milk replacer: Follow the instructions provided to create a suitable milk formula for your puppy’s needs.

.Sterilize the equipment: Boil the tube and syringe in water for 5 minutes, then allow them to cool completely.

.Measure the tube length: Have the puppy in an upright position and measure from the tip of their nose to their last rib to estimate the ideal tube length. Mark this spot with a piece of tape or pen.

.Test the tube placement: Before inserting the tube into your puppy’s mouth, ensure there are no blockages by attaching the syringe filled with air and gently applying pressure.

.Lubricate the end of the tube: Apply a little water or petroleum jelly to ease insertion into your puppy’s mouth.

.Position the puppy correctly: Hold your puppy securely with their head slightly elevated to prevent choking and make it easier for you both during feeding.

.Insert the tube carefully: Gently insert it into your puppy’s mouth, carefully navigating past their throat and towards their stomach as indicated by your previous measurement.

.Check for correct placement: Once you have reached your marked point on the tube, listen for breathing noises near your puppy’s windpipe. If you hear any air exchange, slowly remove and reinsert the tube since it may have entered the airway instead of the esophagus.

.Feed your puppy milk replacer: Secure the syringe filled with milk to the other end of the tube, and gently administer the formula at a slow, consistent rate.

.Monitor your puppy while feeding: Keep an eye for any signs of discomfort or distress. If you notice any, stop feeding immediately and consult your veterinarian.

.Remove the feeding tube: After finishing, gently remove the tube from your puppy’s mouth and clean the area.

.Clean all equipment: Sterilize the feeding tube and syringe after each use to prevent bacterial growth.

.Keep track of your puppy’s progress: Record their weight before and after each feeding session to make sure they are receiving enough nutrition and growing adequately.

Follow these 15 steps diligently to ensure proper nutrition and wellbeing for your puppy. Remember that it is always best to consult with a veterinarian for expert help and support when dealing with newborn puppies that require tube feeding.
