How to Treat Jaundice: 13 Steps

Jaundice is a medical condition characterized by the yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes due to elevated levels of bilirubin, a yellow pigment that’s produced when red blood cells are broken down. Jaundice can occur in adults, children, and newborns and may indicate an underlying issue with the liver, gallbladder, or red blood cell production. Here are 13 steps to help treat jaundice:

1. Consult a healthcare professional: If you notice symptoms of jaundice, visit your doctor immediately for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.

2. Blood tests: Your doctor may order blood tests to evaluate your liver function and bilirubin levels. This will help identify the cause of jaundice and guide treatment.

3. Treat the underlying cause: Treating the root cause is essential to curing jaundice. Depending on your diagnosis, this could involve medications, surgery, or other appropriate interventions.

4. Maintain a balanced diet: Eat a mix of whole grains, lean proteins, fruits & vegetables, and healthy fats to support liver health and overall wellness.

5. Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Proper hydration encourages detoxification, aiding in bile production and flushing out bilirubin.

6. Avoid alcohol: Excessive alcohol consumption can damage the liver — eliminate or limit intake while treating jaundice.

7. Medications: Your doctor may prescribe medications such as ursodeoxycholic acid (for treating certain types of jaundice) or steroids (if an autoimmune disorder causes liver inflammation).

8. Phototherapy: For infants with neonatal jaundice, doctors may recommend light therapy to break down bilirubin molecules for easier excretion.

9. Use over-the-counter (OTC) pain relievers wisely: Take acetaminophen instead of NSAIDs like ibuprofen, which can exacerbate liver damage.

10. Protect your liver: Avoid exposure to potential liver-damaging substances such as certain medications, toxic chemicals, and viral hepatitis.

11. Herbal remedies: Some herbs and supplements may help your liver detoxify and process bilirubin. Consult your healthcare provider before using any herbal remedies or supplements to ensure they’re safe and effective for you.

12. Regular exercise: Staying active can help maintain a healthy weight and improve liver function.

13. Follow-up care: Regular check-ups with your doctor are crucial for monitoring your condition, preventing complications, and adjusting treatment as needed.

If you suspect jaundice, consult a healthcare professional immediately for personalized advice and treatment. By following these steps and working closely with your doctor, you can effectively treat jaundice and improve your overall health.
