How to Train a Hyper Dog: 12 Steps

Introduction:

Training a hyper dog can be a challenging but rewarding experience. With patience, consistency, and the right techniques, you can help your energetic canine companion become a well-behaved and happy companion. Here are twelve steps to guide you through the process of training a high-energy dog.

1.Exercise Your Dog Regularly:

A tired dog is a well-behaved dog. Make sure your hyper pup gets plenty of physical and mental stimulation through walks, runs, playtime, or agility courses to prevent boredom and pent-up energy.

2.Establish a Routine:

Establishing a daily routine for feeding, potty breaks, exercise, and training can create predictability and stability in your dog’s life, making them calmer and more receptive to learning commands.

3.Use Positive Reinforcement:

Rewarding your dog with treats, praise or play when they perform a desired behavior will reinforce that action. This positive reinforcement is essential in teaching your hyperactive dog new commands.

4.Set Boundaries:

Set clear boundaries for your dog both at home and outside by using baby gates or training mats. This teaches them that some areas are off-limits and helps build impulse control.

5.Start With Basic Commands:

Teach your highly-energetic dog basic commands such as “sit,” “stay,” “lie down,” and “come.” These foundational commands provide structure in their life and make it easier to teach more advanced skills later on.

6.Implement “Nothing In Life Is Free” (NILIF) Approach:

This approach requires your dog to earn everything they get by performing a command or positive behavior before receiving rewards such as food, attention or playtime.

7.Use Short Training Sessions:

Keep training sessions brief (5-10 minutes) but frequent (2-3 times daily) for better retention of commands while preventing mental exhaustion.

8.Gradually Increase Difficulty:

Once your dog masters basic commands, gradually increase the difficulty and complexity of tasks by introducing distractions or increasing the duration of the command.

9.Employ Clicker Training:

Clicker training involves using a small device that makes a clicking sound to mark a desired behavior. This makes it easier for your dog to understand which behaviors lead to rewards.

10.Enroll in Obedience Classes:

Obedience classes can provide an excellent opportunity for professional guidance in training hyper dogs and further socializing them with other dogs.

11.Be Patient and Consistent:

Training a hyperactive dog takes time, patience and consistency. Maintain a positive attitude and show understanding that progress may be slow but rewarding.

12.Seek Professional Help if Necessary:

If you feel overwhelmed, do not hesitate to consult a professional dog trainer or a canine behavior specialist for assistance in training your hyper dog.

In conclusion, training a hyper dog requires dedication, patience, and consistency. By following these twelve steps, you can help your energetic companion learn appropriate behaviors while building a strong bond between you both. Remember to stay positive and persistent during this process!
