How to Tie Huaraches: 13 Steps

Huaraches are a traditional Mexican sandal with a rich history dating back hundreds of years. They are made from woven straps and leather, offering a comfortable and durable option for casual wear. Learning how to tie huaraches properly is essential to ensure they stay securely on your feet while walking or running. In this article, we will explore 13 steps to help you confidently tie your huaraches.

1. Gather your materials: You will need a pair of huaraches, and preferably something to sit on while you work.

2. Position the main strap: Locate the longest strap on your huarache. This strap should run from the toe hole to the heel counter. Place your foot in the sandal so that the strap runs between your big toe and second toe.

3. Adjust the heel strap: Pull the heel strap over the back of your heel, making sure it fits snugly against your foot.

4. Begin weaving: Starting at the toe hole, begin weaving the main strap through the side-loops of the sandal. Alternate sides as you weave, pulling it tight to secure your foot.

5. Keep tension even: As you weave through each loop, make sure that you maintain an even amount of tension in both straps for a comfortable fit.

6. Form an “X” pattern: Continue weaving until you reach a point where the strap can form an “X” shape across your instep. The “X” should align with the mid-point of your foot’s arch for maximum support.

7. Lock with a loop: At this point, thread the main strap through one more loop on each side, creating two small loops near your instep’s “X” pattern.

8. Pass through both loops: Thread the remaining length of the main strap through both small loops formed in step 7.

9. Finalize the weave: Continue weaving the main strap through any remaining side loops, making sure to maintain even tension as you go.

10. Tie off the excess: Once you reach the end of the main strap, check for any excess material. Trim and secure it with a knot to prevent it from coming loose as you walk.

11. Adjust for comfort: As you break in your huaraches, you may need to tighten or loosen the straps. Make small adjustments to find your perfect fit and level of support.

12. Repeat with the second sandal: Follow steps 1-11 for the second huarache, ensuring both sandals are adjusted similarly for a comfortable and balanced feel while walking.

13. Enjoy your huaraches: Now that you have successfully tied your huaraches, it’s time to enjoy their comfort and durability for casual outings or even as a minimalist running sandal.

By following these 13 easy steps, you’ll be able to tie your huaraches securely and stylishly. Tying them correctly not only ensures that they stay on your feet but also provides optimal support for comfortable wear throughout the day. Embrace this rich piece of Mexican tradition and start enjoying the unique and attractive styling of huaraches.
