How to Take Cephalexin

Introduction:

Cephalexin is an antibiotic medication commonly prescribed to treat various bacterial infections, including skin infections, ear infections, respiratory infections, and urinary tract infections. Also known as Keflex, this drug belongs to a class of antibiotics called cephalosporins. In this article, we will explain how to take Cephalexin properly to ensure its effectiveness and minimize the risk of side effects.

Consulting Your Doctor:

Before starting Cephalexin treatment, it is crucial to consult your doctor and provide a complete medical history. Inform your doctor of any allergies, especially if you have had previous reactions to penicillin or other antibiotics. This information will enable your doctor to determine if Cephalexin is a suitable option for you. Additionally, discussing any pre-existing conditions or medication you’re already taking can help your doctor know whether to adjust the dosage or consider another medication.

Dosage and Instructions:

Cephalexin is available in various forms – capsules, tablets, or liquid suspension. The dosage depends on the severity and nature of the infection and individual factors such as age, weight, and kidney function. Typically, adults are prescribed 250-500 mg of Cephalexin every 6-12 hours for seven to 14 days. Children’s doses are adjusted according to their weight.

Make sure to follow your doctor’s directions carefully when taking this medication. Here are some general guidelines:

1. Always take Cephalexin with a full glass of water to facilitate the absorption and prevent stomach upset.

2. Try to take Cephalexin at evenly spaced intervals throughout the day. This step maintains a consistent level of the drug in your system.

3. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it’s close to the next dose. In this case, skip the missed dose and continue as scheduled. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.

4. Finish the entire prescribed course of Cephalexin, even if you start feeling better before the medication is finished. Stopping the drug early may lead to a relapse of the infection or the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Possible Side Effects:

As with any medication, Cephalexin could cause side effects for some patients. Common side effects include:

1. Upset stomach or diarrhea

2. Nausea or vomiting

3. fatigue

4. Headache

If you experience any severe side effects such as difficulty breathing, severe rashes, or fever along with persistent diarrhea, contact your doctor immediately.

Precautions:

While taking Cephalexin, avoid alcohol consumption, as it may worsen side effects. Inform other healthcare providers like dentists about your use of this antibiotic before undergoing any procedure.

In Conclusion:

Cephalexin can be an effective treatment for various bacterial infections when taken correctly according to your doctor’s recommendations. Regularly following your prescribed dosage and completing the full course is crucial for the medication’s success in treating the infection and preventing antibiotic resistance. Remember to consult your doctor for any concerns regarding possible side effects and interactions with other medications during your treatment with Cephalexin.
