Encountering a wolf in the wilderness can be a thrilling experience, but given these predators’ history of predating on humans, it’s crucial to know how to survive a wolf attack. This article will outline 11 steps that will help you make it out alive.

1. Maintain your distance: If you spot a wolf, keep at least 300 feet away from it. Wolves aren’t typically aggressive towards humans, but getting too close could provoke them.

2. Avoid direct eye contact: While maintaining your distance, avoid making eye contact with the wolf for too long as it could be interpreted as a sign of aggression.

3. Make yourself look bigger: The larger and more threatening you appear, the less likely the wolf will engage. Hold your jacket or backpack above your head while facing the animal and slowly move backwards

4. Stay calm and do not run: Running could trigger the predator’s instinct to chase. Instead, back away slowly and always keep an eye on the wolf

5. Speak up: Speak firmly and loudly in order to assert dominance as wolves are known to respond well to vocalizations.

6. Travel in groups: Wolves are less likely to attack a group of individuals than a single person. When hiking or traveling in wolf habitats, move together as a group.

7. Carry deterrents: Equip yourself with pepper spray or bear spray designed specifically for warding off large animals, including wolves.

8. Play dead if attacked: Although rare, if a wolf actively engages you in an attack, fall on your stomach and cover your neck with your hands underneath until the animal loses interest.

9. Defend yourself if necessary: If playing dead doesn’t deter an attack, use any available objects – such as rocks, sticks or knives – to fight back and make loud noises to signal distress.

10. Seek medical attention immediately: Even if a wolf attack leaves you with minor injuries, seek medical treatment as soon as possible to address potential infections from bites.

11. Educate yourself on wolf behavior: Gain knowledge about wolves, including their habitats, behavioral patterns and any signs that suggest you might be near them.

Remember, the key to surviving a wolf encounter is maintaining a safe distance, asserting dominance and deterring any aggressive behaviors. Keep these 11 steps in mind when exploring wolf territories and stay safe in the wilderness.
