How to Strip and Wax a Floor

Maintaining a clean and polished floor not only adds to the visual appeal of the space, but also prolongs its lifespan. Stripping and waxing are essential steps in preserving the condition of your floors, especially those made from vinyl composite tile (VCT). In this article, we will provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to strip and wax a floor.
Materials and Equipment Needed:
1. Floor stripper solution
2. Wax or floor finish
3. Mop and mop bucket
4. Scrubbing pad or brush
5. Floor squeegee
6. Wet vacuum or shop-vac
7. Microfiber cloths or rags
8. Gloves and eye protection
9. Ventilation equipment (if required)
Step 1: Prepare the Area
To avoid any accidents or disruption, inform your family members, housemates, or coworkers about your plan to strip and wax the floor. Remove any furniture, rugs, and other items from the area. Sweep the floor thoroughly to eliminate dirt, dust, and debris.
Step 2: Mix the Floor Stripper Solution
Follow the instructions on the label of the floor stripper solution to create an appropriate dilution using water. Depending on your specific product, you may need a mop bucket for mixing. Always wear gloves and eye protection when handling chemicals.
Step 3: Apply the Floor Stripper Solution
Pour a small amount of the solution onto the floor, working in small sections to ensure it doesn’t dry too quickly. Use a mop or scrubbing pad to spread it evenly across each section of the floor.
Step 4: Scrub
Allow the stripping solution to sit for several minutes based on the product’s instructions. Then scrub each section firmly using either an abrasive pad or brush compatible with your flooring material.
Step 5: Remove Excess Stripper and Old Wax
Use a floor squeegee to gather the bulk of the used stripper solution and old wax residue. Vacuum up the mixture with a wet vacuum or shop-vac for quicker cleanup. Continue this process for each section until all have been stripped.
Step 6: Neutralize the Floor
Some products may require you to neutralize the floor after stripping, using a mop and clean water or a specialized solution. Follow the instructions provided on your specific product for this step.
Step 7: Dry the Floor
After neutralizing, allow the floor to dry completely. Avoid walking on it during this time to ensure no contaminants are reintroduced.
Step 8: Apply Wax or Floor Finish
Using a clean mop and bucket, apply a thin, even layer of wax or floor finish across the entire area. Allow it to dry (typically about 30 minutes) before adding additional coats as necessary – two to four coats in total are often recommended.
Step 9: Buffing (Optional)
For a higher shine, some finishes may require buffing after drying. Use a buffing pad or machine per your product’s instructions if applicable.
Step 10: Clean Up
Dispose of used materials and return furniture and other items to their original locations. Depending on the wax or finish used, wait 24-48 hours before heavy foot traffic resumes on your floor.
Now that you know how to strip and wax a floor, you can maintain its appearance and longevity for years to come. The process may seem labor-intensive but is well worth the effort when you see your sparkling-clean floors!
