1. Learn the terminology: Familiarize yourself with sailing terms, such as port, starboard, bow, stern, and many others. This will help you communicate effectively with other sailors.

2. Take a sailing course: Enrolling in a beginner’s sailing course is a great way to learn the basics of sailing and gain hands-on experience under the guidance of an expert.

3. Choose the right boat: As a beginner, it’s wise to start with a small, easy-to-maneuver boat, such as a dinghy or small keelboat.

4. Learn essential knots: Knots are an integral part of sailing. Master basic sailing knots such as the bowline, figure-eight stopper knot, and the cleat hitch.

5. Familiarize yourself with safety equipment: Life jackets are essential for any sailor. Learn about other vital safety gear such as flares, fire extinguishers, and communication devices.

6. Check the weather: Always check weather forecasts prior to setting sail to ensure you’re prepared for potential changes in conditions.

7. Start with calm waters: Begin sailing in calm seas or lakes to build your confidence before tackling more challenging waters.

8. Understand wind direction: Knowing how the wind affects your boat’s movement is critical for any sailor. Use telltales or flags to determine wind direction while on board.

9. Practice steering techniques: Learn how to steer your boat using both the rudder and sails for maximum control and efficiency on water.

10. Learn to tack and jibe: Tacking and jibing are basic maneuvers used to change your boat’s direction while sailing upwind or downwind respectively.

11. Gain experience crewing: Join experienced sailors as crew members to refine your skills and pick up useful tips from seasoned sailors.

12. Get certified: Consider obtaining certifications from recognized organizations like the American Sailing Association or the Royal Yachting Association to boost your confidence and credibility.

13. Practice proper maintenance: Regularly inspect and maintain your sailing gear and vessel to ensure smooth sailing experiences.

14. Sail with others: Sailing with friends or joining a local sailing club offers support, camaraderie, and opportunities for shared learning and experiences.

15. Learn from your mistakes: Like any new skill, it’s important to reflect on your experiences, learn from mistakes, and continuously seek improvement in your sailing abilities.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
