How to Skateboard

Step into the exciting world of skateboarding by learning the basic techniques that will help you ride with confidence. In this article, we will go through important tips and tricks that will make skateboarding fun and safe for everyone who’s just starting out.

1. Choosing the Right Skateboard

Before making your first step on the skateboard, you need to choose the right board that matches your preferences and skill level.  As a beginner, it’s advisable to start with a complete skateboard that already has the necessary components, such as grip tape, trucks, wheels, and bearings. Look for one with a medium-sized deck for easier control.

2. Mastering Your Stance

There are two main stances in skateboarding: regular and goofy. Regular stance is when your left foot is at the front of the board while your right foot pushes, whereas goofy stance means your right foot is at the front and your left foot pushes. Find which one feels more comfortable to you before moving on to other tricks.

3. Learning How to Push

When pushing off, bend your front knee slightly while extending your back leg to push off against the ground. Keep most of your weight on the front foot as you push with force using your back leg. Start slow and gradually increase speed when you feel more confident.

4. Practicing Turning and Carving

Once you’ve gained some momentum, practice turning and carving while maintaining balance on the board. To turn in either direction, lean slightly towards that side as if you were shifting your weight without losing balance. This causes the trucks under the board to pivot and helps you change direction smoothly.

5. How to Stop Safely

As a beginner, it’s crucial to learn how to stop safely when needed. One common method for stopping is called “foot braking,” where you take the foot that’s pushing (rear foot) and place it gently on the ground, causing friction to slow you down. Remember to gradually apply pressure to avoid abrupt stops.

6. Building up Your Confidence

Skateboarding can be challenging, so set realistic goals for yourself to ensure progress and motivation. Break down the different skills you want to learn into smaller steps and celebrate every small victory. Be patient, as practice is the key to mastering any trick or technique in skateboarding.

7. Safety Gear is a Must

Don’t forget to wear appropriate safety gear, such as a helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist guards. Even experienced skateboarders use them to minimize the risk of injury during falls. Investing in quality safety gear means you’ll be better protected while learning new skills.

Now that you’re equipped with these tips, it’s time for the real fun to begin! Remember that skateboarding takes time and practice, so don’t get discouraged if you don’t nail it immediately. As long as you stay persistent and stay safe, you’ll soon be cruising with confidence down the street or at the skatepark!
