How to Silk Press Natural Hair: 13 Steps
Step 1: Clarify your hair
Start with clean hair. Use a clarifying shampoo to eliminate product build-up and residue. This creates a blank canvas for the silk press process.
Step 2: Deep condition your hair
Following the shampoo, apply a deep conditioner to replenish and restore moisture in your hair. Leave it on for the suggested time, then rinse thoroughly.
Step 3: Apply a leave-in conditioner
After you’ve rinsed out the deep conditioner, gently towel-dry your hair. Apply a leave-in conditioner evenly to help moisturize and improve manageability.
Step 4: Detangle your hair
Use a wide-tooth comb to gently remove any tangles from your hair, starting from the ends and working your way up to the roots.
Step 5: Blow-dry your hair
Before starting with heat tools, make sure your hair is about 80% dry. Separate your hair into sections and use a blow dryer with a concentrator nozzle to dry each section completely.
Step 6: Apply heat protectant
Spray or apply heat protectant evenly through each section of your hair. This helps prevent damage and provides additional protection against high heat.
Step 7: Opt for the right flat iron temperature
Choose the correct temperature for your type of natural hair. Thicker, coarser hair may require higher temperatures but always test first to see how your hair responds.
Step 8: Section your hair again
Divide your dried hair into small sections to make it easier for flat ironing. Smaller sections lead to better results during the silk press process.
Step 9: Flat iron each section, using two passes max
Place the flat iron as close as possible to the root and slowly glide it through each section of your hair while maintaining tension with a fine-tooth comb or brush. Avoid passing over the same area more than twice to prevent heat damage.
Step 10: Apply finishing product
Once you’ve completed flat ironing, apply a lightweight oil such as argan oil or hair serum for extra shine, frizz control, and added protection against humidity.
Step 11: Use silk or satin accessories
Wrap your pressed hair in a satin or silk scarf before going to sleep. These materials prevent friction that can lead to frizz and breakage.
Step 12: Avoid wetting your hair
To preserve the results of a silk press, avoid exposure to water or humidity. A shower cap is essential when taking showers.
Step 13: Maintain regular trims and deep conditioning treatments
Keep up with regular trims every 6-8 weeks as needed, and continue deep conditioning treatments every 2-4 weeks to maintain healthy hair throughout prolonged usage of heat styling.
By following these steps, you’ll achieve smooth, shiny, and straight hair that lasts – all without using chemical relaxers or permanent straightening solutions.
