How to Sew Blackout Curtains
Blackout curtains are the perfect solution for those who want to block out unwanted light from their room and create a more pleasant sleeping environment. They are especially useful for individuals who work night shifts or have sensitive eyes that require a darkened space. In this article, we will guide you on how to sew your own blackout curtains, allowing you to customize the look and feel of your living space while achieving effective light control.
Materials Needed:
1. Fabric of your choice (for the main curtain)
2. Blackout lining fabric (White or ivory color is recommended)
3. Measuring tape
4. Scissors
5. Iron and ironing board
6. Pins
7. Sewing machine
8. Thread (matching the color of your chosen fabric)
9. Curtain rod and hooks
Step 1: Measure Your Windows
Begin by measuring the width and length of your window or door where you want to install the blackout curtains. For optimal coverage, add an extra 6-8 inches on each side of the window’s width, and consider if you want the curtains to touch the floor or cover it completely for better light control.
Step 2: Cut Your Fabric
Once you’ve got your measurements, cut the main curtain fabric and blackout lining fabric accordingly, leaving an additional 1-inch seam allowance around all edges.
Step 3: Prepare Your Fabric
Lay your main curtain fabric with the right side facing down on a flat surface, then place the blackout lining on top with its right side facing up, ensuring their edges align perfectly with one another.
Step 4: Iron & Pin the Fabrics Together
Using an iron, press the edges of both fabrics together to create a clean fold along each side – this will make sewing easier later on. Next, pin both layers together along all four sides, keeping the 1-inch seam allowance in mind.
Step 5: Sew the Edges
Sew both layers together using a straight stitch along the pinned edges, leaving an opening of around five inches at the top of each curtain for the curtain rod. Be sure to remove the pins as you go along.
Step 6: Hem the Sides and Bottom
Double fold the sides and bottom edges of your curtains, at a half-inch each time, and then sew a straight stitch along the folded edges to create a neat hem.
Step 7: Create a Rod Pocket
Take the top edge of your curtain and fold it downwards, leaving enough space for your curtain rod to slide through comfortably. Pin this in place, and then sew a straight stitch along the bottom edge to create the pocket. Remember to reinforce your stitching at both ends by backstitching.
Step 8: Hang Your Blackout Curtains
Lastly, slide your newly-sewn blackout curtains onto your curtain rod and install hooks to hang them in place. With this, you can now enjoy a darker, more comfortable living space that caters to your specific needs.
By sewing your own blackout curtains, you gain not only customization options but also better control over the materials used. This DIY project is an affordable solution to achieving an energy-efficient, light-blocking space without sacrificing style or elegance.
