How to Sew a Wrap Skirt

Wrap skirts are elegant, comfortable, and versatile, making them a must-have in every wardrobe. They are also incredibly easy to sew, even if you’re a beginner. In this article, we’ll guide you through the steps of sewing your own wrap skirt.

Materials Needed:

– Fabric (medium-weight fabric like cotton or linen)

– Matching thread

– Sewing machine

– Scissors

– Tape measure

– Pins

– Iron and ironing board

– Fabric marker or tailor’s chalk

Step 1: Choose and Cut Your Fabric

Start by selecting a fabric that you like – remember to consider the drape and feel of the fabric, since it will affect how the skirt falls. Once you’ve chosen your fabric, fold it in half lengthwise and lay it flat on your work surface. Measure and cut out three rectangular pieces: one for the waistband (the length of your waist measurement plus 14 inches by 4 inches), and two for the skirt panels (each panel should be half of your hip measurement plus 8 inches by your desired skirt length).

Step 2: Hem the Skirt Panels

Hemming is essential to giving your wrap skirt a clean and professional finish. Fold each edge of both skirt panels under by ¼ inch, and then fold again by another ¼ inch to encase the raw edges. Press with an iron and pin in place. Then, sew along the folded edges using a straight stitch to create a neat hemline.

Step 3: Attach Skirt Panels to Waistband

Take one of the long edges of the waistband piece and fold it down ½ inch, then press with an iron. Lay out the waistband piece with its right side facing up. Place one skirt panel on top of the waistband with its top edge aligned with the folded edge of the waistband and right sides facing. Repeat with the second skirt panel on the other end of the waistband, overlapping both panels by about 4 inches in the middle. Pin in place and sew a straight stitch along the folded edge, attaching both skirt panels to the waistband.

Step 4: Finish the Waistband

Fold your waistband piece in half lengthwise with right sides together and press with an iron. Sew along the short ends of the waistband using a ½ inch seam allowance, then trim any excess fabric and turn it right side out, so that the seams are hidden inside. Press again with an iron for a crisp finish.

Step 5: Attach Ties

Cut two long strips of fabric (approximately 1 ½ inches wide and twice the length you want your ties to be). Fold each strip in half lengthwise, with right sides together, and sew along one short end and the long edge using a ¼ inch seam allowance. Trim excess fabric, turn right side out, press with an iron, and sew closed the open short end. Then, attach each tie to either end of the waistband by stitching them securely in place.

Step 6: Final Touches

Press your wrap skirt one last time, paying close attention to all seams and edges. This ensures a clean finish and prevents any wrinkles or folds from altering its shape.

With these simple steps, you now have a beautiful wrap skirt that you’ve sewn yourself! Enjoy wearing your creation confidently, knowing you’ve created a custom piece tailored just for you.
